Closer Watch

Los Angeles Angels - Ernesto Frieri notched another save Thursday, his eighth of the year and third since last Sunday. Meanwhile, Joe Smith has been working in the setup role, and despite manager Mike Scoscia's refusal to officially name Frieri as closer, it looks like Frieri has reclaimed the job. The home run issues that plagued Frieri early in the season seem to have been corrected, as he has now gone eight straight appearances without allowing a homer.

Cleveland Indians - Cody Allen retired the side in order and struck out two in the ninth inning of Friday's game against the Rockies en route to his second save of the season. The Indians' closer situation has been murky since John Axford was removed from the role, but Allen, who has struck out 29 in 22.1 innings this season, took a step toward claiming the job Friday. Bryan Shaw has posted better ratios thus far (1.46 ERA, 0.89 WHIP) and is an option as well, but manager Terry Francona has not yet tipped his hand as to which player he prefers.

Recommended Pickup
Oswaldo Arcia, OF, MIN - A wrist injury put Arcia out of commission in early April, and though he hit .308/.349/.487 while on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester, the Twins decided to leave him down at the conclusion of the assignment to be sure the wrist was completely healthy. He was recalled late last week and proceeded to bat cleanup in his first four games back, before slotting into the five-hole for Friday's tilt against the Yankees. The 23-year-old Arcia once again collected multiple hits Friday, the third time he's done so since returning to the big club, and launched his second home run in four games. Last season, Arcia hit .251/.304/.430 with 14 homers in 97 games (378 plate appearances), and while he is a free swinger who will strike out a lot, playing time should remain ample as the team leans on him as a key run producer.
