Closer Watch

Chicago Cubs - After giving up a double to Jason Heyward to begin the top of the ninth inning Friday, Hector Rondon allowed an RBI single to Christian Bethancourt to blow the save -- his third of the year -- and spoil another quality start from Jake Arrieta. The Cubs ended up rallying in the bottom of the frame, taking Rondon off the hook and giving him the win, but it's the latest in a series of recent poor performances from the right-hander. In his last eight appearances, Rondon has given up eight runs on 12 hits and four walks, with five strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Meanwhile, Neil Ramirez has surrendered just two runs on 10 hits in his last 24 appearances, dating back to May 8, and is the clear choice to inherit the closer role should Rondon lose it.

Arismendy Alcantara, 2B, CHC - There had been rumblings that a promotion to the major leagues was likely in store for Alcantara shortly after the All-Streak break, but he ended up getting the call earlier in the week to fill in while Darwin Barney was away on paternity leave. Alcantara's debut was a bit of a letdown, as he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, but he followed it up by going 4-for-5 in Thursday's finale in Cincinnati, falling a home run shy of the cycle. It led the Cubs to reconsider sending him back down, and manager Rick Renteria even slotted Alcantara atop the lineup for Friday's series opener against the Braves. The 22-year-old was beating down the door at Triple-A Iowa, batting .307/.353/.537 with 25 doubles, 11 triples, 10 homers and 21 steals in 89 games, and if he produces at a level anywhere near that, he will stay up for good. Forget Alcantara simply being an NL-only option, his ability to hit for average and power, along with his impressive speed, make him worthy of consideration in nearly all formats, certainly in any leagues with more than 12 teams.
