Week 15 Reactions: Commissioner Goodell on Line 1

This article is part of our NFL Reactions series.

There were some amazing performances Sunday, which helped make up for the dreadful Saturday night matchup between the Cowboys and Jets, but all of it will be overshadowed by Odell Beckham, and not because he made another incredible one-handed catch.

Hosting the 13-0 Panthers, the Giants had a bit of history on their side in ending long winning streaks. It looked very promising early on after Beckham burned Defensive Player of the Year candidate Josh Norman on a long pass that should have gone for six, except that Beckham dropped it. That turned out to be one of the minor interactions between the two, as they battled throughout the day in what felt like a competition to see who could get the most personal foul penalties. Despite the ridiculous behavior, the NFL put together a nice compilation video for those who weren't watching the game (sorry, embedding isn't enabled).

But this is the play everyone will be talking about:

Beckham very clearly launches himself to nail Norman with a helmet-to-helmet hit, a play that astonishingly drew only an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty (Norman got one too for retaliating) instead of an ejection. Based on the two going back-and-forth with each other all game, it's baffling the referees didn't take further action than two penalties that offset each other. Beckham is very likely to be fined for the hit, though a suspension seems unlikely (regardless of whether it's

The ridiculousness overshadowed what turned out to be a fantastic game, as the Panthers took a 35-7 lead after Ted Ginn's third quarter touchdown (his second of the game), only for the Giants to climb all the way back and tie it on 14-yard touchdown by, you guessed it, Beckham with 1:46 left in the fourth quarter.

But then Cam Newton, who has all but locked up the Most Valuable Player Award, led the Panthers on an eight-play, 49-yard drive to set up Graham Gano's game-winning field goal as time expired. Newton finished with a remarkable 340 passing yards and five touchdowns plus eight carries for 100 rushing yards, becoming the first player in NFL history to pass for five touchdowns and rush for 100 yards in a game, according to Elias. Newton has passed for five touchdowns in three of the last five games, helping the Panthers become just the fourth team ever to start 14-0. He has also now passed for at least 3,000 yards and rushed for at least 500 in five different seasons, the most by any player ever.

One of the big beneficiaries of Newton's season has been wideout Ted Ginn, who has scored 10 touchdowns in 13 games after catching nine touchdown passes in 104 games before this year (he also had two rushing touchdowns during his rookie 2008 season and added four return touchdowns in his career). Ginn has scored twice in each of the last three weeks and is the first Panthers receiver to reach double-digit touchdowns since Steve Smith in 2005.

And speaking of scoring multiple touchdowns in a game, Doug Baldwin caught two more Sunday against the Browns to become the third player since the merger with multiple receiving touchdowns in four consecutive games, joining Calvin Johnson (2011) and Cris Carter (1995). Baldwin's jump hasn't been quite as pronounced as Ginn, as he had 15 receiving touchdowns in his career entering this season, though his previous season-high was just five. He now has 11 touchdowns in the last six games after scoring that many in the last three years combined.

Baldwin's quarterback cannot be overlooked either, as Russell Wilson continues to throw touchdown passes, adding three more Sunday. He has 19 in his last five games, plus a rushing touchdown, while not turning the ball over during that span. The Seahawks clinched a playoff berth with a win Sunday and they'll finish out their schedule with a home game against the Rams and then a road trip to Arizona, who could be resting their starters in preparation for the playoffs (of course, that also applies to the Seahawks).

Newton wasn't the only QB to account for five touchdowns Sunday, as Kirk Cousins and Teddy Bridgewater both threw for four scores and rushed for another. Wait, what? Cousins and Bridgewater? Cousins may not be quite as surprising, as he's scored four touchdowns in two other games this season (Week 7 against the Bucs, which included one rushing touchdown, and Week 10 against the Saints), though he had just one passing touchdown in every other game. Bridgewater, on the other hand, came in with nine touchdowns all season, with his last five coming over the previous seven games (four passing, one rushing). His passing touchdowns went to Stefon Diggs (two), Jerick McKinnon and Zach Line, and while he'll be hard-pressed to repeat the feat, he coincidentally plays the Giants in Week 16.

The recent breakouts of Baldwin and Ginn surely benefitted fantasy owners who drafted them late or picked them up off the waiver wire, but two earlier-round selections are also putting up big numbers. After publicly complaining that he wasn't a big enough part of the offense, Sammy Watkins has been excellent, scoring six touchdowns in the last four games, while passing the 100-yard mark thrice in that span. Not to be outdone, Antonio Brown torched the previously elite Broncos secondary by catching 16 passes on 18 targets for 189 yards and two touchdowns, the third time in the last five games he's scored multiple times. Brown has reached the century mark eight times this season, and he needs just 112 yards over the next two games to eclipse last year's impressive total of 1,698 receiving yards, which was already the sixth-highest single-season total in league history. The fact that he's been able to put up those numbers while Ben Roethlisberger has only played 10 games is simply remarkable.

More Sunday fun:

Amari Cooper had six catches on nine targets for 120 yards and two touchdowns Sunday, becoming the first Raiders rookie wideout to reach 1,000 receiving yards (he now sits at 1,040), and he's the first Raiders wideout to do it since Randy Moss in 2005.

• Playing against his old team, Emmanuel Sanders caught 10 passes on 16 targets for a career-high 181 yards and a touchdown, though the Steelers pulled off the comeback victory to keep their playoff hopes alive.

• After failing to rush for a touchdown in every game since Week 1, the Chargers finally got another in possibly their final game in San Diego, led by Danny Woodhead, who rushed eight times for 10 yards and a touchdown while adding six catches for 50 yards and three receiving touchdowns against the Dolphins. Woodhead has scored nine touchdowns this season, which is more than LeSean McCoy, Matt Forte, Frank Gore, Eddie Lacy, Le'Veon Bell, Marshawn Lynch, T.J. Yeldon, DeMarco Murray, Jonathan Stewart and Mark Ingram among running backs. That being said, Woodhead's nine touchdowns came in only four games. Up next: back-to-back road games against the Raiders and Broncos.

Eric Decker scored his 10th touchdown of the season Saturday against the Cowboys, joining Brandon Marshall in the double-digit receiving touchdown club. Despite a number of solid wide receiver duos in the NFL (Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd, Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant, Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree, Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson), Decker and Marshall are the only ones to have both reached 10 touchdowns.
