At age 49, Maggert is still hanging in there on the PGA Tour, but he turns 50 in February and although his plan is likely to stay on the PGA Tour as long as possible, missing cuts can get old after a while. It's not that Maggert can't compete anymore, but the draw of the Champions Tour will only get stronger if he stumbles out of the gate this year.
He may not have planned it this way, but Maggert did just enough last season to prolong his PGA TOUR career one more season, and even if he doesn't retain his card this year, he'll turn 50 in February 2014 and become eligible for the Champions Tour. Maggert doesn't have much upside left, at least none the PGA TOUR, but he proved last year he still has more game than a lot of golfers.
Maggert's game completely fell apart last season, but he's back for another try in 2012. Maggert has the option to play the Champions Tour soon, but considering be took the time to qualify for the PGA Tour through Q-School, it's pretty obvious where his priorities are. Maggert earned more than $800K just two years ago, so it won't take much effort to destroy his numbers from 2011. He'll also begin the season on a medical exemption due to a shoulder injury, so watch his health.
At 46, Maggert isn't quite ready to start looking ahead to the Champions Tour. After a couple of disappointing years, Maggert found a little magic last year as he finished in the top 125 for the first time since 2007. Maggert's prospects don't look great, however, as his upside is definitely limited. Maggert is fairly proficient at hitting fairways and greens, but, predictably, he doesn't have much distance off the tee.
Maggert did not retain his PGA Tour in 2009, but did finish second at Q School to earn full membership for 2010. What you see is what you get out of Maggert, but this guy can flat out hit a golf ball. The new v grooves should help level the playing field for the pure ball striker, but getting the ball in the hole will continue to be a problem. Do not expect a huge comeback out of the Texas A&M Aggie.
Maggert has rotated good years and bad years since 2003, and he's due for a good year in 2008, but his age might be catching up with him now, which is going to limit his upside. His lack of distance off the tee is relegating him to a non-factor at certain events, and the events where he can thrive are usually the ones held opposite the WGC events and the British Open.
Simply put, Maggert is regressing. Yes, he did win last year, but without that win he's looking at about $500K in earnings. That number would not retain a tour card for 2007. Maggert's production will continue to drop in 2007.
