Ties for 34th at John Deere Classic
August 14, 2016
Gillis shot a 1-over 72 Sunday to tie for 34th at the John Deere Classic.
ANALYSIS
Just one year removed from nearly winning this event, Gillis again showed a knack for TPC Deere Run with a decent finish. Gillis was in position to be inside the top 10 with a good Sunday finish, but failed to make a birdie on the back nine as he gouged his scorecard with two bogeys and a double bogey.

Gillis has had an interesting stretch the past five years, the first four spent on the PGA Tour. He was 43rd in the point standings in 2010, 114th in 2011 and 40th in 2012 before plummeting to 152nd in 2013 to lose his card. But he’s back, but he’s also now 46 years old. But he was fifth in putting average on the Web.com tour, third in birdie average in second putts per round. Is that enough to turn in a good season, even in the top 150? Probably not.
Outside a runner-up finish at the Honda Classic in March, there wasn't much to write home about for Gillis last season. He performed well under the pressure of securing his card late in the year, but there's nothing on his resume the last few years that indicates he's about to blow up. Gillis is a pretty steady player, but his upside isn't very high. As such, the best move is probably to pass on Gillis in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues, he should go in the ninth round.
Gillis has been at this professional golf thing for quite a while and has never really made a splash. He played well the last two seasons, but all he has to show for it is $2 million. He does have his card for 2012, and there's an old saying about "a chip and a chair and a chance," so you never know. Realistically, though, there's no reason to think that Gillis will show much improvement in what will be his 19th year as a professional.
Gillis' 2010 season came out of nowhere. The 42-year-old Gillis spent most of the previous five seasons toiling away on the Nationwide Tour, but after a fifth-place finish on the Nationwide in 2009, Gillis was again back up with the big boys. He didn't waste his opportunity this time either by capturing three top-10s on his way to a top-80 finish on the PGA TOUR. Gillis now has full playing privileges this season, but judging by his track record, he'll likely be fighting for that card again come September. Gillis accomplished his career year in 2010 with accuracy off the tee and on the green. He ranked in the top 30 in both categories last season.
