Rough front nine during final round at TPC Potomac
July 2, 2017
Levin closed with a one-over 71 on Sunday at the Quicken Loans National to finish four-under and tied for fifth.
ANALYSIS
Levin was able to finish top-five despite firing just one under-par score throughout the week, posting a five-under 65 on Saturday. He was fourth among the field in SG: OTT and fifth in SG: Putting, but struggled with his wedge play around the greens. Levin has now made four consecutive cuts after a brutal start to 2017, and he'll look to maintain that momentum at the upcoming Greenbrier Classic.

Levin's earnings numbers have been all over the place since joining the PGA Tour in 2009. He's had three years under $1 million, three years just over $1 million and one year over $2 million. Obviously the year over $2 million looks like the aberration right now. In his seven years on the PGA Tour, he has only thee top-3s and a lack of high-end finishes really limits his upside. As such, Levin is not a good option in salary cap leagues this season. In draft leagues he should go near the ninth- or 10th-round.
It's all about starts for Levin this season. If he gets to double-digits, he'll easily top his 2013 number, but if he doesn't, well, it could be another disappointing season. Considering he's not too far removed from a couple $1 million+ seasons, he'll probably secure enough exemptions to at least double his number from last season.
After a third-place showing at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in early February followed by a top-10 the next week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, it appeared as though Levin was well on his way to matching or exceeding his $2.3 million from 2011. His play dropped off, however, after his hot start and it took quite a while to get it back. A fourth-place finish at The Memorial in May stemmed the tide, but once again, after that outing, his game fell. That trend is a little disturbing, but Levin has the talent to break it this year. Look for him to get back to his 2011 form this season and play more consistently. Levin looks like a bargain at this price - grab him in your salary cap league. In draft leagues, he's a fifth-round pick.
There was no sophomore slump for Spencer Levin in 2011. Levin posted decent numbers as a rookie in 2010, but he had no problem surpassing those numbers in 2011. His earnings nearly doubled from year one to year two and that can be directly attributed to his Top-10 finishes. As a rookie, Levin earned three Top-10s, as a sophomore he earned six. While it looks like this is just the start for Levin, don't expect another doubling of his efforts this season. A slight improvement on his numbers from year two to year three would be satisfactory. In draft leagues, Levin should go somewhere in the fourth round.
Levin is a young player on the rise, making a huge jump up in earnings last year from about $500K in 2009 to more than $1 million in 2010. As is often the case with young players, his best finishes came during the fall season when he earned a third-place finish at the Children's Miracle Network Classic and a fourth-place finish at the JT Shriners event. He did next to nothing during the heart of the fantasy season last year, and as such, he's a risky pick, even at a low price. Unlike most of the younger players on the PGA TOUR, Levin is actually short off the tee, but last year he showed an improve accuracy. He'll need to be even more accurate this year to make up for his short comings off the tee.
The 25 year old sophmore has got some talent and was able to recover nicely after a opening round 76 at Q School to earn his card again in 2010. There is some upside to this PGA sophmore, but he will have to overcome a low priority rank in the Q School/ Nationwide reshuffle to start the year.
