Lickliter II has gone from bottom feeder, to PGA Tour winner, back to bottom feeder again. In 2006 it appeared as though he was back to being a contender on the PGA Tour. That's at first glance, though. A closer look reveals that about two-thirds of his money earned in 2006 came from fall-season events. Sometimes a player getting hot at year's end is a sign of the future. Troy Matteson would be a good example of fall-season results being a harbinger of the future. Lickliter's results, however, look like on old veteran taking advantage of weaker fields. Lickliter is not worth a selection unless your season runs late into 2007.
Lickliter is not the player that carded eight top-10s in 2001, but he has stayed in the top-125 every year since 1996. Until last year that is. His trip through Q-School should remove any complacency that might have crept in over the years.
Lickliter has always been a middle of the pack player who had a nice year in 2001, but has since fallen back to Earth. We think Lickliter will remain in the middle of the pack this year, earning his usual $1 million to $1.5 million.
Lickliter ended up 49th on the money list, which is about where he should be. He had a nice year in 2001 taking in $1.9 million, but again that was the exception to the rule. Lickliter has been around long enough to get a feel for his game, and think he will again finish around 50th on the list. Expect only inflation to make his earnings go up.
