Ties for fourth at Honda Classic
February 26, 2017
Collins closed with a one-under 69 on Sunday at the Honda Classic to finish seven-under and tied for fourth.
ANALYSIS
Collins had made just two cuts since late July entering the week, so a top-five finish was much needed for the struggling 38-year-old. Collins' short game ability was put on display at PGA National, finishing third among the field in strokes gained around-the-green and first in strokes gained putting. He may tee it up next at the Valspar Championship in a little over a week, where he missed the cut in 2016.

Collins notched a runner-up at the Barbasol Championship and a top-5 at the Honda Classic but was a complete disaster the rest of the season, missing 20 of 26 cuts to finish 143rd in the FedEx Cup Point standings. He retained his card, though, with a 22nd-place finish at the Web.com Finals. Collins has never gone north of $1 million in eight seasons on the PGA Tour, so to expect that would be pie in the sky. His limited upside and lack of consistency make him undraftable in most fantasy formats.
Unlike some of the guys near spot number 125 on the money list, Collins is probably quite pleased with how the 201-2016 turned out. To this point in his PGA Tour career, Collins has proven just good enough to keep his card each year and that should be expected again this year, which makes him a poor salary cap pick this season. He may go undrafted in many leagues because there's little upside that can be seen at this point.
Collins missed 17-of-28 PGA Tour cuts, with only a January top 10, to finish 159th in the point standings. Now 47th in the priority rankings, he will be hard-pressed to improve on that standing. Collins has made the FedEx Cup playoffs just once, in 2010.
Finishing just outside Top-125 isn't a complete failure, but Collins entered his sophomore season last year with really high expectations. Expect the 2012 version to appear at some point this season.
Collins' rookie season on the PGA TOUR in 2009 was a disappointment, but after returning to Q-School season's end, he regained his playing privileges. The second time around, Collins took advantage of the opportunity and secured his card within the season. While it appears Collins is getting better, it doesn't look like a big jump in earnings is on the horizon. Collins finished the last two seasons in the top 20 in putting average.
Finished second on the Nationwide Tour money list and has full playing privledges. Collins can roll it on the greens, but struggles a little off the tee. Overall, Collins was very consistent on the Nationwide Tour especially torwards the end in 2009 and could surprise all of us by year end.
