The one thing that has really surprised me this season has been the unlikely emergence of a number of second- and third-string goalies around the league. This has been a fantasy GMs dream – many of us who drafted poor goaltending are being roundly rewarded with fantastic waiver pickups that many of us figured were flashes in the pan.
At the beginning of the season, Minnesota's goaltending job clearly belonged to Niklas Backstrom. A combination of poor play and injury opened the door to Josh Harding whose play has left little doubt that he is the de facto starter now. His 18-5-3 3SO 1.51GAA .939SV% is one of the prime reasons why Minnesota is currently in a playoff position.
