DraftKings NHL: Tuesday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings NHL series.

GOALIE

Semyon Varlamov, COL vs. DET ($7,800): Varlamov's as lowest as you should go on a night with plenty of good goalies facing weak teams. He's been excellent lately save for a loss against the Sharks in which he allowed four goals, but he also saw 40 shots and going into the game was 5-1-1 with a .945 save percentage. The Red Wings are also in a slump, but if you prefer a safer option, Andrei Vasilevskiy ($8,000) is the best value bet among goalies over $8,000.

CENTER

Sebastian Aho, CAR at BOS ($6,800): He's scored 73 points playing with a winger who's never scored more than 25 goals and another who is 37 years old. Sure, he's facing Patrice Bergeron, but the Hurricanes have been arguably the better team since January, tying the Bruins with 41 points in that span but with two more wins, 20 to 18. Aho is carrying a five-game point streak into the game and averages as many fantasy points per game (4.5) as Steven Stamkos ($7,400).

Mark Scheifele, WPG at TB ($6,500): Even with back-to-back three-point games Scheifele has his work cut out for him against the Stanley Cup favourite. This is a good measuring stick for the Jets, who have Cup aspirations of their own, and it's possible Paul Maurice shortens his bench and leans on his top guys a little more. Scheifele and Wheeler is about as good a duo as you can get in the NHL, and earlier this season against the Lightning combined for four points.

WING

Blake Wheeler, WPG at TB ($6,700): It's actually kind of amazing he's not among the eight wingers priced above $7,000, but we'll take Wheeler at this price, even if it's against the Lightning. It's rare for an elite winger to be available at this price, making it worth considering to linestack with Mark Scheifele. Wheeler's a playmaker so don't expect goals, but worth noting that his shooting percentage this season is below his career average and he did score four on five shots in his most recent game.

Jason Zucker, MIN at NSH ($4,400): Wild fans should be glad Zucker stayed after a trade to the Flames fell through. He's on a five-game point streak with three goals and two assists, and with an exodus of bodies has seen his ice time creep up every so slightly. He's currently playing with Eric Staal on the top line with top prospect Ryan Donato.

Filip Zadina, DET at COL ($2,900): Through three games he's still looking for his first career point, and it's going to come sooner than later. His ice time has crept up from 10 minutes in his NHL debut to 15 minutes against the Coyotes on Saturday, and will play on the second line with speedster Andreas Athanasiou as well as on the second power-play unit. The future is now for the Red Wings, and they're going to play the kids.

DEFENSE

Victor Hedman, TB vs. WPG ($6,100): I like Hedman's dependability with Kris Letang potentially not playing, the Preds' defensemen all in a bit of a rut and Thomas Chabot still on the learning curve. The Jets will be hard to contain with Patrik Laine playing well, but Hedman's an excellent source of peripheral stats and gets all the prime assignments in the offensive zone and on the power play.

Filip Hronek, DET at COL ($3,700): The Avs have a 28th-ranked penalty kill, and Hronek is currently running the Wings' top power-play unit. The talented defenseman has been splitting duties with Mike Green, but with a playoff spot out of reach and the future in mind, Jeff Blashill is giving Hronek the reigns. There's plenty of upside to be had here.
