FanDuel NHL: Thursday Targets

This article is part of our FanDuel NHL series.

SLATE PREVIEW

The Flyers and Canucks both stayed alive in different fashions Tuesday, as Thatcher Demko took over Game 5 with 42 saves while the Flyers nearly blew a two-goal lead but ended up winning in overtime.

Both the Golden Knights (-240) and the Islanders (-135) are expected to close out this series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. It's quite tough to bet against a red-hot goalie like Demko, though, so read about why I like the Canucks again tonight along with other value plays to add into your DFS lineups.

GOALIES

Semyon Varlamov, NYI vs. PHI ($7,900): Look for Varlamov to bounce back, as he has avoided losing consecutive games in August. In fact, he has two losses and was yanked from a start earlier in this series, but in the three games that followed those duds, Varlamov has a 3-0 record and a .972 save percentage.

Thatcher Demko, VAN vs. VGK ($7,500): Demko was simply brilliant in Tuesday's win over Vegas, as he steered away 42 of 43 shots to keep the Canucks' season alive. There's reason to believe he can repeat that performance, as he has the draft capital -- No. 36 in 2014 -- and he posted better than a .920 save percentage in 12 of 27 appearances in 2019-20. He'll almost certainly get the start Thursday, so take advantage of the hot hand.

VALUE PLAYS/ONE-OFFS

Jean-Gabriel Pageau ($4,800): Head coach Barry Trotz would likely bump Pageau to the first line of Mathew Barzal (face) is unable to go, and he should surpass 20 minutes of ice time in that situation. He's already been impressive this series with three goals on 14 shots, and centering Jordan Eberle and Anders Lee lifts his potential further.

Scott Laughton, PHI vs. NYI ($3,800): If Sean Couturier (undisclosed) is unable to suit up for Game 6, Laughton will fill the void on the first line. He did so in Game 5 and performed admirably with a goal, an assist and three shots on net. Don't hesitate to plug in Laughton if Couturier sits out.

LINE STACKS

Vancouver Canucks vs. Vegas Golden Knights

C - Bo Horvat ($6,300)
W - Brock Boeser ($5,800)
W - J.T. Miller ($6,800)

Boeser spent time toiling on the third line during this series, but head coach Travis Greene brought him to the top unit for Tuesday's elimination contest, and the young winger came through with a goal and an assist. The bump in ice time certainly increases his opportunities, and those opportunities are even more quality next to Horvat and Miller, who have combined for nine points over the past four outings.

New York Islanders vs. Philadelphia Flyers

C - Brock Nelson ($6,500)
W - Josh Bailey ($5,100)
W - Anthony Beauvillier ($6,200)

Be careful with this line stack and make sure to check out our lineup tool to ensure Mathew Barzal (face) is playing, because if he isn't, this unit could be broken up. Otherwise, feel confident with what these three bring to the table. On average, they have combined for 8.4 shots per game, and they've done plenty of damage on the scoresheet with 11 points in that stretch.

DEFENSEMEN

Alexander Edler, VAN vs. VGK ($4,400): Edler consistently stays above the 20-minute mark each game, while Quinn Hughes ($5,500) has dropped below that mark on three occasions this series, so lean towards the former. His main contributions are on defense and as a physical threat, and that's worthy of a fantasy flier since he has registered 15 shots and 24 blocked shots through five games.

Adam Pelech, NYI vs. PHI ($4,300): Pelech ranks second among Islanders blueliners with 3.17 xGF/60 against Philly, according to Natural Stat Trick, and it has mattered little that he hasn't converted. He's clearly knocking on the door, his salary is cheap as can be and he blocks plenty of shots to maintain a steady floor.

Alec Martinez, VGK vs. VAN ($4,000): Just because I'm picking Vancouver to win doesn't mean I'm shying away from the Martinez train. That's because he doesn't need points to live up to his salary, as he fired five shots and blocked two shots -- 11.2 fantasy points -- in Tuesday's 2-1 loss. It's a fantastic floor, and his ceiling remains high with three points in five games this series.
