Osala, a prospect of the Hurricanes, made an announcement via Twitter on Wednesday that he intends on playing for Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk of the KHL next season, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
ANALYSIS
Osala had a very successful campaign with AHL Charlotte in 2010-11, scoring 13 times and setting up 29 goals, so it comes as a surprise that he would leave the Hurricanes' affiliate to play overseas. "I don't think it would be a good choice for him because we're calling these players up and if you're capable, there will be a spot here," GM Jim Rutherford said last week. "He's a big guy. He needs to improve his footspeed. If he can get a half-step (faster), he's a guy who might have a chance to play here."

Osala has some developing to do if he wants to become a true two-way player, but the winger is already primed offensively, having posted 13 goals and 42 points in 59 games with AHL Charlotte last season. And once he develops some scoring consistency in the heavy traffic of the NHL, Osala should have no problem becoming a regular on the Hurricanes' roster.
The Capitals, deep at the forward position, dealt Osala to the Hurricanes last March. Carolina is a good fit for Osala, as he is a gritty player with good awareness and goal-scoring talents. He is a bit streaky, though, so expect the 'Canes to test him in the AHL for a number of games in 2010-11.
This 6-4 winger has all the skills to be productive in the NHL. It took the Finland product time to adapt to hockey in North America, but after a season or so his true ability came out. He possesses a great shot, skates well, and is a great two-way player. He did make a few showings last season in Washington, but did most of his damage in AHL Hershey. He tallied 37 points (23G, 14A) in 75 games. He may see some more time in Washington this coming season, but will spend most of his time in Hershey.
