Galiev agreed to terms on a two-year contract with KHL Ak Bars on Friday.
ANALYSIS
After failing to crack the 23-man roster for the Capitals this past season, Galiev will join the KHL. Despite hailing from Russia, the 25-year-old has never played for any European-based club aside from national junior teams. Instead, the winger came up through the QMJHL with the Saint John Sea Dogs before getting selected in the third round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Galiev put up a solid 40 points in 56 outings for AHL Hershey last season, so don't be surprised to see him get another look from an NHL club down the road.

Several seasons removed from a promising major-junior career, Galiev’s stock has taken a hit in recent years, but the 23-year-old winger appears to have gotten back on track in 2014-2015. Spending his first full season in the AHL ranks, Galiev rekindled his scoring touch with 25 goals and 45 points in 67 games, buoyed largely by a league-leading 15 goals and 26 points on the power play. With the arrival of right wingers T.J. Oshie and Justin Williams, Galiev is likely to return to AHL Hershey for most of 2015-16, but may find his way to regular playing time in the NHL as early as next season.
Galiev spent 2012-13 bouncing between the AHL and the ECHL, but the Russian product handled a difficult situation well. As a reward for his strong and unselfish play he should find a full-time AHL role waiting for him. Galiev is starting to develop a reputation as a team-first player who excels comes playoff time. If he can continue his development, look for him to challenge for a spot on the parent club in a year or two.
Galiev is a young Russian right winger who has steadily put up good numbers in the QMJHL. During the last two seasons he has recorded 60-plus points and has his eye on joining the rest of the Russians on this squad. He may have a shot at moving to a different league this season, but this is not certain. At 19 he has some time to continue to perfect his game.
Another Russian drafted in one of the first three rounds in the last seven years, the winger will continue to polish his skills in the QMJHL this season most likely. He was part of the developmental camp in July and has at least a few years before he has the chance to make it at the NHL level.
