Sydor signed late in the summer to compete for one of the final two spots on defense. He hasn't played particularly well during preseason games, but would bring a ton of experience to a unit that is still relatively young.
Sydor has been the subject of trade talk, with a $2.5 million contract due in 2008-09. He was a healthy scratch for most of the playoffs and contributed little in the regular season. Sydor, who scored one goal and added 12 assists in 74 games with the Pens, has had an excellent NHL career but is way past his prime at age 36.
Sydor was brought in to provide defensive depth at the NHL level and to mentor young defender Kris Letang. He could have a larger role, including one that sees him getting power-play time on the second unit, depending upon how things play out. He's a good low-risk draft pick at the end of drafts. At 35, Pittsburgh represents Sydor's fourth organization in four years but he couldn't be moving into a better system.
Brought back for his leadership and possible re-teaming with Sergei Zubov. If he sticks with Zubov at even strength and the power play, there's a lot of upside.
Sydor suffered through his worst offensive season since the season L.A. traded him to Dallas (1996-97). Sydor's puck-moving skills, power-play accumen and leadership are tailor-made for the new NHL, and we think he's due for a return of the 40-point season. He'll probably come cheap at your draft table. Get him and gloat.
