Lessio signed with Russian club Medvescak Zagreb on Friday, TSN reports.
ANALYSIS
Lessio had his 2015-16 campaign cut short due to a knee injury, and subsequently failed to re-up with the Habs when he became a restricted free agent this summer. While he was not short on fanfare as LA's second-round pick in the 2011 draft, Lessio fell short of his lofty billing as a gifted offensive producer with wheels. In fact, the 23-year-old only produced seven points in 41 games between the Coyotes and Canadiens, plus he had a minus-11 rating over three years.

Lessio, a second-round pick of 2011, was developing into a strong two-way player, playing key roles with AHL Portland as a member of the Coyotes organization. He even played in 12 NHL games this past season following a trade to Montreal, but didn't make much of an impact with just two points. At 23 years old, Lessio’s hockey career is far from over, but he must show that he’s capable of playing at the NHL level, or otherwise suffer as a tweener – a player too good for the minors but just not quite good enough for the show. His speed and scoring ability can be valuable weapons for teams looking to take a chance on a young, bottom-six forward with a little upside.
Lessio split time between the Coyotes and AHL Portland last season, appearing in 26 games with the big club and recording five points. He did put 44 shots on net in the small sample, hinting at some more upside if he wins a full-time role with the club. However, it's most likely that Lessio begins the year in the AHL to further refine his development.
Lessio played in 66 games last year during his second season in the OHL, scoring 59 points and recording 71 sin bin minutes. He'll likely spend another season in the juniors and may play for Canada at the 2013 World Juniors. He has great skill and size for a forward, and should be in Portland after one more year of seasoning in juniors.
Lessio, the Coyotes' second-round pick in the 2011 draft, played in 66 games in the OHL last season, notching 27 goals and 27 assists and a plus-8 rating. He'll likely need at least another year of seasoning at the junior level before he gets a chance to make an impact.
