Liffiton spent the 2009-10 season in the Rangers organization before signing a one-year deal with the Avs in July. He collected 20 points (5G,15A) and 118 penalty minutes in 72 games at AHL Syracuse, and ould be a good source of PIMs if he ever manages to catch on at the NHL level. For now, he is expected to start the upcoming season back in the AHL with the Lake Erie Monsters.
Liffiton had a cup of coffee with the Rangers in 2007, and may do so again at some point. That is all he will ever be however.
Liffiton will get a good look at training camp; he's gotten many call ups during the season when injuries began to mound. Whether he'll make the team is based on team need -- Liffiton is not a puck moving defenseman, but a solid blueliner who can mix it up from time to time.
Liffiton is a solid all around defenseman with good skating and mobility. However, with so many defenseman in camp, it will be difficult to see where Liffiton fits onto this NY Rangers squad; most likely be sent to Hartford (AHL) to start the season and be an injury fill-in when the big club needs a body. Liffiton skated in 58 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL, tallying four goals and 10 assists for 14 points, along with 169 penalty minutes.
By the end of the year, we'll all be talking about Liffiton's slap-shot; a well-aimed cannon that will instill fear in goaltenders all over the NHL. However, not to take away from his other traits, Liffiton is also a solid defenseman that can skate and give his team a solid effort night-in and night-out. Bear any setbacks, we'd be shocked if this kid is not on the big club by opening day at some capacity.
