Walter played fairly well for AHL Abbotsford in 2011-12, scoring 59 points in 75 games and eight points in eight playoff games. He may have a shot at an NHL call-up in 2012-13.
Walter, spent most of the 2009-10 season with New Jersey's AHL affiliate, the Lowell Devils, where he led the team in scoring with 58 points (22 goals, 36 assists) in 78 games. He will likely open the upcoming season back in the AHL with the Lake Erie Monsters.
Walter has played well in the AHL over the last two seasons (133 points in 141 games), but he will have to battle to try to make the roster out of camp. Even if he starts the season out with Bridgeport, expect him to be one of the first players the Islanders call on when injuries come around.
The Islanders are high on the recently-acquired Walter, as GM Garth Snow said he is automatically one of the top prospects in the organization. We'll have to see how well he performs in training camp to see if the team will try to work him on to the team immediately.
The son of former NHL Ryan Walter, Ben is slowly making his way to the bigs. A scorer in college, he struggled to find twine last season in Providence. The big club is very high on him and he will likely stick, at least for a while. Consistent production won't come for a while.
Walter is the son of former Canadiens' star Ryan Walter. He's a goal scorer from college who should start his career in the AHL.
