Richards took a step backwards in the 2011-12 as he ended up in a platoon after being the number one the year before. His goals-against average also rose to 3.55. He will continue to battle with Carter Hutton and Kent Simpson for time in the net for Rockford (AHL) this season.

Richards set rookie goaltending records last season with 44 games, 17 victories, lowest goals against average at 2.89, save percentage at .899 and shutouts with two. He still is only 24-years-old, but will need an injury or poor play by Corey Crawford to see any time with the Blackhawks.

Richards is looking to move up another step in the Blackhawks organization this season. He spent most of 2009-10 with Toledo of the ECHL before getting a cup of coffee with Rockford of the AHL. He went 3-2 in six games for Rockford and sported a 3.12 goals against average and a .895 save percentage. Depending on the future of Corey Crawford next season, Richards could see time with the big club this season or definitely 2011-12.
