Makarov signed with Spartak Moscow of the KHL on Monday, NBCSports reports.
ANALYSIS
Makarov was a pending restricted free agent for the Sabres, but has elected to leave the NHL and will play for Spartak Moscow during the upcoming season. Makarov has seen action in just one NHL game in his career, as he's mostly been relegated to AHL duties in Rochester. At just 23 years old, there's still a possibility he returns to the NHL in the future.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2015
2014
Makarov will enter the third and final year of his entry-level contract as the incumbent starter for AHL Rochester, despite winning just 16 games in 39 appearances last year and sporting a mediocre 2.91 GAA and .905 save percentage. However, it should be noted that the team in front of Makarov just wasn't very good or particularly deep, and that the 22-year-old is seen as one of Buffalo's most talented young goalies. He appeared in one game for the Sabres after a slew of injuries hit the team, stopping 33 shots for a .917 save percentage in a losing effort, and will get the call again should an injury befall either Robin Lehner or Chad Johnson. There's plenty of motivation for Makarov as he tries to prove he belongs in the Sabres' long-term plans, and he will be pushed by former Swedish Hockey League Goalie of the Year Linus Ullmark, who is expected to make his AHL debut this season, and Nathan Lieuwen, last year’s backup.
An undrafted prospect, Makarov is silencing his doubters after starting in the ECHL and ending the season as AHL Rochester’s starter during the playoffs. Though a slew of injuries to Buffalo’s goaltenders created the opportunity for Makarov, the Russian goalie has run away with the job, posting a .927 save percentage and 2.20 goals-against average to finish the 2013-14 season. Makarov will battle Nathan Lieuwen for the starting job in Rochester, and the goalie who wins may get a look from the Sabres should injuries necessitate a call up once again.
