Cairns was selected by the Oilers with the 84th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

ANALYSIS
Cairns looked like a star while playing tier-two junior hockey in the OJHL this past season. He posted 33 points in 42 regular season games and he elevated his game in the postseason, racking up 19 points in 22 games. The production was largely the product of playing in a poor league, but Cairns does have some legitimate offensive talent. The problem is that he plays a high-risk game and is often caught out of position defensively. That’s a fixable issue, but he is going to struggle against better competition unless he changes the way he plays. Cairns, who turned 18 in April, has plenty of time to develop. He isn’t scheduled to head to Cornell University until the 2017-18 season.
