Viktor Fasth: Signs with KHL Team
GFree Agent
July 9, 2015
Fasth signed a one-year contract Thursday with CSKA Moscow of the KHL, Luke Fox of Sportsnet.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Fasth was a feel-good story during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 campaign, posting a 15-6-2 record, 2.18 GAA, and .921 save percentage over 25 games with the Ducks in what marked his first exposure to the NHL level. It's all been downhill for him since then, as health issues have plagued him for much of the last two seasons while his numbers regressed considerably as a member of the Oilers. With no NHL team seriously considering him for a backup gig, Fasth will head to the KHL to ply his trade. The goalie will turn 33 in August and seems a long shot to return to North America.

The Oilers acquired Fasth late last season to help stabilize their goaltending situation. Fasth is certainly better than just about anyone the Oilers have thrown in net the past couple of seasons outside of Ben Scrivens, but still only posted a 2.73 GAA and .914 save percentage. While the Oilers will more than likely say that he and Scrivens will go into training camp as equals, the job seems Scrivens' to lose and Fasth will more than likely go into the season as the backup. Best case? He earns the short straw on a platoon, but that makes him a difficult play in any fantasy format.
Fasth enjoyed a strong regular season, finishing with the 11th-best save percentage and GAA in the NHL while recording 15 wins. There were times when it appeared as though he had stolen the starting gig from Jonas Hiller, but he sat stapled to the bench in the postseason. Still, he will definitely push Hiller this year and don't be surprised to see a platoon emerge at some point. The Ducks seem to believe in him, having signed him to a two-year extension in February 2013. You should, too.
So, is Fasth really as good as advertised? He's been the best goalie in the Swedish league for the last two seasons and he absolutely carried Team Sweden at last spring's World Championship. He isn't huge, but he's fiery and competitive and that makes him seem bigger than 6-0. He's 30 and has plenty of pro experience under his belt, so that gives him the inside edge as the back-up. And if his butterfly is as good as it seems, he could be pressing workhorse Jonas Hiller for games. No, not starter-type minutes, but he could push to get as many as 25 starts.
