Portillo was a third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. He's registered a 2.96 GAA and a .908 save percentage through 19 games at the University of Michigan this season. The Sabres have Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and could have Devon Levi by the end of this season or the start of the 2023-23 campaign; this makes Portillo expendable before his rights expire.
