Ponomarev is expected to compete for a spot on the Opening Night roster next season, per Rob Rossi of The Athletic on Friday.

He was traded to the Penguins as part of the Jake Guentzel deal and it seems general manager Kyle Dubas is expecting big things out of Ponomarev. In 45 minor-league contests this year, the 22-year-old Russian has notched nine goals and 21 helpers. There figures to be plenty of competition among the Penguins' prospects for limited spots in the lineup next season, so Ponomarev is far from a lock for NHL minutes.
