Closer Watch

Francisco Cordero received his first save of the season for the Blue Jays on Sunday. It didn't come in the cleanest fashion as he allowed a run on two hits and a walk, but Cordero has always walked the tightrope as a closer. He will remain in the ninth-inning role until regular closer Sergio Santos returns from the DL.

Also on Sunday, Hector Santiago converted his fourth save in five chances. He has put up some very impressive peripheral numbers so far this season, with a 13.50 K/9IP and 1.50 BB/9IP. However, he has already given up three home runs in just six innings. Addison Reed, Matt Thornton and Jesse Crain are all nipping at his heels for the closer's role, so he has to cut down on the long balls.

Recommended Pickup

Jarrod Parker, P, OAK - If there is one way to shore up your pitching, it's by picking up one of the best prospects in the game just before he is scheduled to make his first major league start of the season. The strategy may not always work, and Parker isn't Stephen Strasburg or Matt Moore. However, Parker has been in Baseball America's top 50 prospects the past five years, and will be starting for Oakland on Wednesday. After an offseason trade from the Diamondbacks to the Athletics, Parker has a sparkling 2.18 ERA in over 20 Triple-A innings. He has put up big strikeout numbers in his minor league career and is worth a look for team owners that are lacking in pitching. The potential reward outweighs the risk here.
