Closer Watch

This column was posted Friday night, and with the three games on Thursday absent of any save opportunities, there is little new information to glean on the closing front as of writing. Nevertheless, pay close attention to the closing situations in Los Angeles (AL), Chicago (NL), San Diego and Seattle, teams that have suffered much closer turmoil in recent days.

Recommended Pickup

P.J. Walters, SP, MIN - At 27 years old, Walters doesn't have the cachet of many of the hot pitching prospects called up thus far in the season, but he's been just as effective as most. He's turned in four quality starts in four outings, and that should be enough of a sample size to put him on the radar of fantasy players in deep leagues and AL-only leagues. In his previous cups of coffee in the majors, Walters was undermined by surrending walks and home runs, and while those issues haven't necessarily gone away with the Twins, he has limited his overall hits allowed, resulting in a tidy 1.17 WHIP. With the Twins' rotation in shambles, Walters should be a fixture in the pitching corps for the rest of the season, and stands to benefit from feasting on the weaker lineups of the AL Central, such as the Cleveland lineup he will face on Saturday. His current level of performance is probably not sustainable, but if he can keep his ERA around 4.00 going forward while maintaining his respectable strikeout rate, he might not be a bad choice to round out your fantasy staff.

Other recent recommendations:Justin Smoak, Colby Rasmus, Kris Medlen, Lonnie Chisenhall and Tom Wilhelmsen
