Closer Watch

Arizona - The roller coaster ride that is the Heath Bell experience continued Thursday, with the right-hander serving up a two-out, solo home run to the Mets' Anthony Recker in the 13th inning to blow the save. Arizona ended up winning, with Brad Ziegler getting the save in the 15th (his first of the year), but it does little to mask Bell's ongoing trouble with the long ball. He's now given up six homers since June 10, and while Bell had turned in four consecutive scoreless appearances prior to Thursday, it still seems like an inevitability that J.J. Putz will reclaim the closer's role once he's worked out his mechanical problem.

Philadelphia - Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Pirates on Thursday to pick up his 17th save of the season. The veteran right-hander has rebounded nicely since blowing four saves in a stretch of five appearances there in June, and while he certainly still holds some trade value, Papelbon's declining strikeout rate and drop in velocity are glaring issues.

Recommended Pickup
Wilson Ramos, C, WAS - Ramos' return to the lineup Thursday didn't come with all the hype and hoopla that accompanied teammate Bryce Harper's return earlier this week, but Ramos made his presence felt in a big way. The 25-year-old went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI in his first game back after missing nearly seven weeks with a(nother) hamstring injury, and while the Nationals will likely ease Ramos back into his regular workload, he immediately overtakes Kurt Suzuki as the team's primary option behind the plate. Though many heads-up fantasy players likely targeted Ramos a week or so back, he can provide your team with a shot in the arm, if you're lucky enough to land him.
