Closer Watch

Mets -- Jeurys Familia blew a save for the first time this year Monday, but was able to work out of trouble after giving up just the one run, and the Mets eventually took it in extras. He's in no danger of losing his job whatsoever at this point.

Diamondbacks -- This has to be one of the more muddled situations, as guy-you've-never-heard-of Enrique Burgos nailed down his first save of the year in the 13th inning Monday, and he struck out two while he was at it. Addison Reed had pitched the 12th after Brad Ziegler handled the 10th and 11th. It's most likely that Ziegler will get the save chances going forward, but then again, if that was the case, you'd figure the D-Backs would reserve him for a save chance in a road game. For that reason – along with the many strikeouts he's been accumulating – Burgos merits a pickup in deeper formats on spec.

Marlins -- Steve Cishek might have been demoted from closing, but that doesn't mean he can't lose games, as he dropped to 1-4 after allowing a 13th-inning run to Arizona on Monday. A.J. Ramos remains the smart-money closing play, and he took the closer's job of pitching the ninth at home in a tie game Monday.

Athletics -- Tyler Clippard was sharp en route to Monday's save, striking out two in a perfect, nine-pitch inning. It's a positive outing he definitely needed after giving up a two-run homer his last time out and generally posting surprisingly mediocre stats (especially in terms of strikeouts and walks) in the early going this year. With Sean Doolittle on the mend – he's pitching in a Double-A rehab game Tuesday – Clippard should be feeling the pressure as he tries to hold onto this job.

Recommended Pickup
Matt Shoemaker, SP, LAA – I've seen Shoemaker get cut loose in a couple of my leagues recently, with his struggles – largely related to an abundance of home runs – inflating his ERA in the early going and making owners lose faith. Unfortunately, he's made 11 mistakes that batters have hit over the fence in just seven starts. But don't be so quick to give up on the guy – his sky-high 20.4 percent HR/FB is bound to come down, and his sparkling 38:7 K:BB in 38.1 innings certainly points to a lot of good pitching. Shoemaker was a bit homer-prone in the minors, but he only gave up 14 taters in 136 innings last year, so some normalization is quite likely. He's not going to come close to replicating last year's 16-4 record and 3.04 ERA, but he can still be a productive fantasy asset, especially in head-to-head formats, and he's coming off his best start of the year Saturday against Baltimore.
