Yahoo DFS Hockey: Saturday Playoff Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Hockey series.

Saturday's NHL slate begins at 7:00 PM Eastern time and features Game 5s in the Penguins-Capitals and Jets-Predators series. Both series are tied 2-2, so there's value to be found on each of these four teams. Still, certain individuals stand out as players to target and certain ones should be avoided.

GOALIE

Pekka Rinne, NSH vs. WPG ($28): It hasn't been the easiest series for Rinne, but he was excellent in Thursday's Game 4 win, stopping all but one of the 33 shots he faced. The Finnish veteran is more than capable of backing that effort up at home, yet he comes in at least $4 cheaper than every starting alternative in net.

GOALIE TO AVOID

Matt Murray, PIT at WAS ($35): Murray played well in Game 4, but he's still allowed 10 goals on 108 shots for a .907 save percentage this series. Those numbers don't justify a $35 valuation on the road, especially since Washington went 28-11-2 at Capital One Arena this season.

CENTER

Paul Stastny, WPG at NSH ($19): Stastny's the second-cheapest member of Winnipeg's elite top-six forward group, coming in $1 above Kyle Connor. You'd never know that by his recent production, though, as Stastny has two goals and six helpers over a five-game point streak heading into this one. Between his price and production, there's little not to like about Stastny here.

CENTER TO AVOID

Evgeni Malkin, PIT at WAS ($33): Malkin, who has missed three games this postseason with a lower-body injury, has looked far from his usual self over his past three appearances, averaging just 4.7 fantasy points. He's still priced at $33, so you aren't getting good value for the Russian given his current limitations.

WING

Jake Guentzel, PIT at WAS ($24): After piling up multi-point efforts in four of his last five games, Guentzel has 10 goals and 21 points through 10 appearances this postseason. It sounds repetitive, but Guentzel should be in your lineup every time at this price.

Patrik Laine, WPG at NSH ($27): Laine scored the lone Jets goal in Game 4, stretching his point streak to four games. Even with that goal, the career 18.0 percent shooter is converting at just an 8.6 rate with three goals on 35 shots this postseason. He has plenty of room left for upward regression, but even replicating his average of 11.3 fantasy points from this four-game point streak would be enough to make Laine a strong choice at $27. Stacking Laine with his linemate Stastny also raises a lineup's upside, since a goal by one is likely to lead to an assist by the other.

WINGS TO AVOID

Austin Watson, NSH vs. WPG ($18): Watson's a key third-line piece for Nashville, but he's overpriced at $18. Between the regular season and playoffs, Watson has just 64 points in 248 NHL appearances -- a paltry rate of 0.26 points per game.

Brandon Tanev, WPG at NSH ($17): Tanev had a four-game goal streak snapped in Game 4, but don't count on him starting a new one. The bottom-six winger averaged just 12:40 of ice time this season, and he's exceeded 14:30 only twice in nine playoff games.

DEFENSE

P.K. Subban, NSH vs. WPG ($23): Subban's heated up at the perfect time after a lackluster start to the playoffs, racking up a trio of goals and two helpers over a three-game point streak heading into this one. He's recorded three blocks twice in that stretch after reaching that threshold only twice over the previous 22 games, and Subban's also fired 23 shots on goal over his last six appearances. Given his cross-category appeal and offensive skills, Subban's upside rivals that of any blueliner in this slate.

Dmitry Orlov, WAS vs. PIT ($16): In a slate teeming with expensive stars, it's important to find affordable supporting players. Orlov fits that mold perfectly, as he's established a high floor for himself by blocking multiple shots in nine of 10 games this postseason while putting multiple pucks on net in eight of those contests. That's not to say Orlov doesn't also chip in on the scoresheet, as he's racked up a goal and four assists in his past six games.

DEFENSEMEN TO AVOID

Dustin Byfuglien, WPG at NSH ($24): Byfuglien did have a goal and an assist during Game 2 in Nashville, but he has only one helper over three other postseason road games. That lack of production isn't surprising given that he produced just two goals and 15 assists in 33 regular-season road matches.

John Carlson, WAS vs. PIT ($26): Carlson's offense has dried up in this series -- he has only one goal without an assist through four games. With other high-priced players rolling, you're better off saving money on the blue line rather than allocating $26 to Carlson.
