BantamweightOther
September 27, 2018
McDonald (hand) has decided to retire after being limited by hand injuries, MMAFighting .com reports. "Today I am officially retiring from MMA fighting and I plan on never competing in martial arts competitions again," McDonald announced. "I had a wonderful career and a wonderful staff, and even greater -- a wonderful wife and a wonderful God to thank for all the great moments."
ANALYSIS
McDonald's career has spanned over a decade long, competing 23 times and compiling a 19-4 record. His final fight came this past July, where knocked out former Bellator champion Eduardo Dantas in 58 seconds. To have surgery on hand
BantamweightOther
August 21, 2018
McDonald will have surgery on his broken left hand Aug. 30, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old does not have a set timetable for his return prior to surgery. McDonald suffered the injury during his most recent bout -- a knockout victory over Eduardo Dantas in under a minute. According to McDonald's statement on Instagram, a bone in his hand was "crushed", and the surgery will require fusing his hand bones together and adding a steel plate.
Improves to 2-0 under Bellator banner
BantamweightOther
July 20, 2018
McDonald defeated Eduardo Dantas via KO (punches) at 0:58 of Round 1 at Bellator 202 on Friday in Oklahoma.
ANALYSIS
McDonald was a more-than-respectable bantamweight during his tenure with the UFC, beginning with a four-fight winning streak, but finishing 2-3 over his last five. Anxious to get out of his UFC contract, he's since made the move to Bellator, where he is 2-0 and already has a signature win against a former title holder. This one came in dominant fashion, as McDonald dropped Dantas with a big right before finishing him with ground-and-pound early on. Reports of a potentially serious hand injury had surfaced, but McDonald cleared them up via his personal Twitter account later in the week. He said that although he suffered a broken wrist, he won't necessarily need surgery off the bat, and will instead attempt to allow it to recover first. Surgery may be an option if it doesn't heal properly, as McDonald simply referred to this as "step one." With current bantamweight champion Darrion Caldwell locked in to a fight with Noad Lahat on Aug. 17, McDonald should have plenty of time to recover before seeking a title shot.
Sweeps all three rounds against Peter Ligier in the main event of Bellator 191
BantamweightOther
December 15, 2017
McDonald defeated Peter Ligier via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at Bellator 191 on Friday in Newcastle, England.
ANALYSIS
McDonald appeared to be a bit rusty in this fight, which makes sense. Prior to this fight, he had not fought in over a year after leaving the UFC. He had a huge technical advantage in this fight. He landed the better strikes in the standing position, and he was able to score some takedowns near the end of each round. The promotion gave him a bit of a tune-up opponent, and he was able to get the win. Bantamweight is one of Bellator's stronger divisions, and McDonald did not show much that would make him a threat against Champion McDonald.
Latest to move to Bellator
BantamweightOther
March 26, 2017
McDonald signed with Bellator on Friday, ESPN's Brett Okamoto reports.
ANALYSIS
McDonald was a quality UFC bantamweight, who at 26 years old, likely still has some untapped potential. He's 3-3 in his last six UFC bouts, but the Last Stand Fight Team product will now put his skills to the test under the banner of another promotion.
Released from UFC
BantamweightOther
March 17, 2017
McDonald was released from his contract with UFC on Friday, Damon Martin of Fox Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
The former bantamweight title contender reportedly asked for his release due to "dishonest" business practices by the UFC. He hasn't fought since July, when he suffered a knockout loss to John Lineker at UFC Fight Night in South Dakota. The 26-year-old had a tough end to his time in UFC, going 2-3 in his last five bouts with the promotion.
