Drops decision in Argentina
LightweightBellator
November 17, 2018
Powell lost to Jesus Pinedo via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night 140 on Saturday in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
ANALYSIS
Powell opened the fight by walking the newcomer down and landing some hard body kicks but ultimately wasn't able to generate enough offense against Pinedo, who landed the harder shots for most of the bout. Powell is a tough fighter with a strong jujitsu game but doesn't have a reliable way of taking the fight to the ground, which will leave him at a disadvantage in most fights. He slips to 9-4 in professional MMA as a result of the loss.

Gets new opponent in Argentina
LightweightBellator
October 24, 2018
Powell will take on Jesus Pinedo in a lightweight matchup at UFC Argentina on Nov. 17, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Powell had originally been scheduled to face Claudio Puelles, but after Puelles withdrew due to an injury, he'll now draw Pinedo, who will be making his company debut. Powell lost his first two bouts under the UFC banner, but came back to KO Alvaro Herrera via body kick at UFC Calgary in July. He's never been submitted as a professional, which is a good sign, as three of Pinedo's last for victories have been by way of submission. Both men will be looking for a win in convincing fashion if they wish to cement their status with the company long-term.
Picks up first UFC win Saturday in Calgary
LightweightBellator
July 28, 2018
Powell defeated Alvaro Herrera via KO (body kick) at 1:52 of Round 1 at UFC on FOX 30 on Saturday in Calgary.
ANALYSIS
On the heels of back-to-back losses to Drakkar Klose and Darrell Horcher to begin his UFC career, Powell finally finds himself in the win column. It was far from a technical masterpiece, but Powell could care less about that. Powell has plenty of length and underrated power, but he doesn't appear to have the requisite skill set to beat any legitimate opponents. Saturday's victory almost certainly saved his job, but little should be expected moving forward.
Suffers split decision loss at UFC Fight Night 112 in Oklahoma City

June 25, 2017
Powell was defeated by Darrell Horcher via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night 112 on Sunday in Oklahoma City.
ANALYSIS
After a close first round in which Powell was able to back Horcher up with kicks, Powell got dominated on the ground in the second round. He got rocked on the feet and then taken down. He was not technically sound trying to get up, and took a lot of damage from Horcher until the bell signaled the end of the round. He almost caught Horcher in an Anaconda towards the end of the third round, but Horcher was able to survive. It was a surprising split decision as it seemed like Horcher won both the first and second rounds.
Fails to look competitive in UFC debut

January 16, 2017
Powell lost to Drakkar Klose via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night 103 on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Powell was able to land some nice elbows in the clinch, but that was about the only bright spot for the 28-year-old, whose plan seemed to be to close the distance at every opportunity to compensate for the disparity in striking. Powell relies heavily on Jiu Jitsu in the octagon, but was unable to get the fight to the ground on this night, which ultimately resulted in a loss. We have seen plenty of successful BJJ practitioners in the UFC, but Powell's striking looked underdeveloped compared to Klose's, which raises the question of how far he can go without significant improvements.
