Dropped from UFC

October 3, 2020
Alcantara was one of four fighters released from the UFC roster Friday, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Of the list of fighters released, Alcantara was potentially most surprising given his service time dating back to UFC 134 in August of 2011. Not to mention the fact that he's earned five post-fight bonuses in his last seven fights. The Brazilian bantamweight just turned 40 in August, however, and is 1-3 in his last four walks to the cage. It's been over two years since his last fight, a second-round stoppage loss at the hands of top prospect Cory Sandhagen. If Alcantara does decide to continue his fighting career, he'd undoubtedly have plenty of suitors.

Set for 180-day medical suspension
BantamweightOther
August 29, 2018
Alcantara (nose) has officially received a 180-day medical suspension following his knockout loss to Cory Sandhagen over the weekend, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alcantara and Sandhagen earned $50,000 Fight of the Night bonuses this weekend after an entertaining back-and-forth affair where both fighters landed significant strikes. Of course, Alcantara ended up being knocked out and also picked up a broken nose during the matchup, which he recently underwent successful surgery to repair. Alcantara was already expected to miss some time, though the UFC officially dealt him a 180-day suspension. He'll have to serve at least 60 of those days, but a physician does have the ability to clear him following that initial timetable if everything checks out. The 38-year-old has now lost three of his last four fights and could certainly use a bounce-back effort his next time in the Octagon.
Undergoes nasal surgery

Alcantara underwent surgery to repair a broken nose following his UFC Lincoln loss to Cory Sandhagen on Saturday, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alcantara nearly pulled out the upset in the first round, but it all started going downhill for him the moment he let go of that armbar. The bout went on to win Fight of the Night honors, but many argued it was a horribly late stoppage by referee Brandon Pfannenstiel. His failure to step in resulted in Alcantara taking a significant amount of extra punishment, though the nose was probably already broken at that point. While the injury will cost Alcantara some time, he is likely to receive a medical suspension anyway, so this shouldn't be consequential in terms of scheduling his next fight. He can likely still resume training in a non-contact capacity in the near future.
Loses via TKO to Cory Sandhagen in Fight of the Night contender
BantamweightOther
August 25, 2018
Alcantara was defeated by Cory Sandhagen via TKO (punches) at 1:01 of Round 2 at UFC Lincoln on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Alcantara came out firing and rocked Sandhagen just seconds into the fight. From there he locked in a deep armbar and it seemed as if Sandhagen's arm would break. "Marajo" was unable to finish the submission and Sandhagen escaped. He wound up on top of Alcantara and rained down brutal ground-and-pound for last few minutes of the round. The fight was almost stopped multiple times. As soon as the second round started Sandhagen drilled the Brazilian with a hook and knocked him down. After a high volume of follow up ground-and-pound the referee finally stopped the fight. It was a very late stoppage. Referee performance aside, the back-and-forth effort led both Alcantara and Sandhagen to leave the venue with $50,000 Fight of the Night bonuses.
Makes quick work on Joe Soto at UFC Fight Night
BantamweightOther
February 3, 2018
Alcantara defeated Joe Soto via TKO (punches) at 1:06 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Belem, Brazil
ANALYSIS
There is not much to say about this one. Alcantara landed a huge shot that forced Soto back against the cage. He tried to cover, but Alcantara was all over him and finished the bout. The referee probably could have stopped it early, so it was clearly a finish. Alcantara needed this fight after dropping his previous two bouts. He improves to 36-9 as a professional.
Move up in weight class recommended
BantamweightOther
January 2, 2018
The California State Athletic Commission has recommended that Alcantara move up to the featherweight division following his UFC Fresno loss to Alejandro Perez, Marc Raimondi of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Alcantara will no longer be able to fight at bantamweight in the state of California, it remains to be seen if other commissions will enforce this recommendation. Alcantara may have made weight with a mark of 135.4 pounds, but entered the Octagon at 154.6 on fight night, an increase of 14 percent. California will continue to issue these recommendations in cases where the weight cut has been deemed severe, though there has yet to be a tangible consequence from the restructured policy. Meanwhile, Alcantara has already been booked for another fight in the bantamweight division, as he's set to square off against Joe Soto at UFC Belem on Feb. 3. Though he hasn't necessarily had problems with missing weight in recent memory, Alcantara was notably the last fighter to the scale during UFC 212 weigh-ins in June. Though there isn't necessarily a correlation between making weight and fight location, it's worth noting his next matchup will be in his home country of Brazil.
