Sterling Marlin: Retires from NASCAR

Marlin is moving into a team owner role at BD Racing in the Sunoco National Tour this season, and putting to an end his 30 years as a driver in NASCAR, racintoday.com reports.

"It's over," Marlin said. "I won't be racing any more. I don't think I'd enjoy just standing around watching," he said. "I might go down to Talladega when they run there & I haven't decided for sure." Aside from a few late model races on some local tracks, Marlin's racing career has come to an end. During his 30-year career, Marlin amassed 748 Sprint Cup Series starts, 10 victories and 216 Top 10's. His two Daytona 500 wins and the two seasons Marlin finished third in the championship standings are among his best achievements.

The veteran Marlin announced his retirement from NASCAR in March 2010. He finishes his career with 748 Sprint Cup starts, 10 victories, two Daytona 500 victories and 216 career Top 10's.
Marlin comes from Ganassi Racing to MB2 Motorsports and fields the tribute #14 car of his father Coo Coo Marlin. Hendrick engines will be the backbone of this new team, so we expect some marginal improvement in Marlin's 2006 season.

Earnhardt Ganassi Racing will field a fourth entry, the No. 41 Chevrolet, in the Daytona 500 and expects to decide on a driver Monday, NASCAR.com reports. The choice had been narrowed to two drivers but Earnahrdt Ganassi declined to name them, though they did indicate that veteran Marlin was not among the finalists.
