The Armband: FPL Gameweek 33 Captain Rankings

This article is part of our The Armband series.

There were a lot of ways to go with your captain in Gameweek 32, and if you didn't make the correct selection, that's on you. Romelu Lukaku is on almost half of the teams at the official Fantasy Premier League game, followed by Diego Costa, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero. To recap, all of them either scored or assisted and that's only at forward. In the midfield, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Eden Hazard, Philippe Coutinho and Joshua King all had above-average performances. To repeat, if you picked the wrong captain, you should give up.

But of course, as everyone that plays FPL knows, there are rarely two good weeks in a row. Yet, when looking at the schedule, it's hard not to get excited for the points to rack up once again with Spurs (v. Bournemouth) and Everton (v. Burnley) in extremely favorable home fixtures. The rest of the matches are a little sketchier, with Liverpool at West Brom and Arsenal at Middlesbrough, but nothing truly terrible. If you want to captain Ibrahimovic, Hazard or Costa in the battle of the giants, do so at your own risk.

Ibrahimovic is playing great, so he's probably the easiest to trust playing at Old Trafford. Still, there hasn't been more than two goals in the last three home matches for Manchester United. Chelsea's back line has fallen apart somewhat and that's leading to more goals, but I'm still wary.

Getting back to the two sides everyone should feature, Harry Kane could make his way into the starting XI after coming off the bench in the win against Watford. That could end up being one of the more troubling situations if he doesn't start. Of course, Dele and Eriksen are still there to do the rest. The hope is that Dele's value doesn't falter with the return of Kane, as he has five goals and three assists in the last six matches. Heung-Min Son could be in this conversation as well, but it's unknown what the lineup will look like with Kane back. For Everton, it's straight forward given how dominant Lukaku has been at home. The Belgian is unstoppable, there's no other way to put it. He has 12 goals and three assists in his last seven matches at Goodison Park. You could turn to Ross Barkley, or even Leighton Baines, but why try and outsmart yourself?

As for the better matchup, neither Bournemouth nor Burnley is worth much away from home. Burnley have just nine goals in 16 road matches this season, and while they've held their last two opponents scoreless, that's not saying much against Sunderland and Boro. As for the Cherries, they've also been better, drawing their last three on the road against Man United, Southampton and Liverpool, but a recent home loss to Chelsea could have their spirits low.

Sunderland haven't scored in their last six, so backing someone on West Ham could be considered. Aguero and Man City travel to Southampton, who have turned things around the last couple weeks. While City are playing well, I'm not sure it's enough to give Aguero the armband over Lukaku or Kane. Backing Watford (v. Swansea) and Stoke (v. Hull) is smart in the betting world, but maybe not so much in fantasy unless Troy Deeney returns to the starting XI.

Coutinho and Alexis Sanchez will be looked at plenty as well with how much West Brom and Boro are struggling. The two clubs have a combined three points from their last six matches. I'd take Coutinho and Roberto Firmino, who has scored or assisted in four of the last five, over Divock Origi, with Alexis over all of the Reds, just barely.

While there are other options, I suggest not swaying from Spurs or Everton this week, unless you want to do the opposite of everyone else. In that case, Deeney and Saido Berahino are your choices.
