Brentford host Chelsea at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday night to open Gameweek 5, with Chelsea sixth on seven points and Brentford seventh on six. Our Brentford vs Chelsea prediction is a 2-2 draw, with Chelsea conceding at least twice in every league game this season and four of the last five meetings at this ground ending level.
The last time Chelsea kept a Premier League clean sheet, the opponent was Brentford. That was Jan. 17, eight months ago, and Xabi Alonso has since taken over a side that has scored 10 goals in four league games and conceded nine.

Brentford vs Chelsea Lineups & Injury News
Brentford vs Chelsea Predicted Lineups
Predicted lineups: Chelsea are projected in the 3-4-2-1 Alonso used against Hull City but with four changes to it, and three of them are forced: Maxence Lacroix into the back three, Pep Chavarria at left wing-back in place of Jorrel Hato, Danny Welbeck up front for the injured Joao Pedro, and Valentin Barco in central midfield with Reece James unlikely to be fit.
RotoWire's Premier League predicted lineups are updated throughout the week, with confirmed starting XIs added closer to kickoff.
Brentford predicted starting XI (4-2-3-1): Caoimhin Kelleher; Aaron Hickey, Kristoffer Ajer, Jannik Schuster, Keane Lewis-Potter; Vitaly Janelt, Mamadou Sangare; Jaidon Anthony, Yehor Yarmolyuk, Kevin Schade; Igor Thiago
Chelsea predicted starting XI (3-4-2-1): Emiliano Martinez; Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Maxence Lacroix; Pedro Neto, Valentin Barco, Romeo Lavia, Pep Chavarria; Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers; Danny Welbeck

Brentford Team News & Injuries
Nathan Collins is the absence that changes the XI. He went off against Sunderland with a calf problem and Jannik Schuster replaced him, made nine clearances on debut and has kept the place, partnering Kristoffer Ajer in a back four that has conceded four goals in four games. Collins, Sepp van den Berg (groin), Josh Dasilva (hamstring) and Mathias Jensen (strain) all carry return dates around the league's resumption on Oct. 10, so none of them feature before the international break. Jensen and van den Berg are now both being targeted at the EFL Cup fourth-round tie against Sunderland in late October rather than the Villa game.
Kaye Furo had surgery last week after picking up an injury in training, and Andrews gave no timetable: "I'm not sure how long he's going to be out for but we'll obviously look after him and get him back to a good place." Antoni Milambo played for Brentford B last weekend, his first competitive minutes since an ACL injury last October, and Andrews has said he needs several more outings at that level first.
The rotation news is all good. Andrews made eight changes at Reading and only Ajer, Lewis-Potter and Sangare played in both games, so Hickey, Yarmolyuk, Anthony and Schade come back in fresh. Michael Kayode, Dango Ouattara and Mikkel Damsgaard started the cup tie and are projected to drop out.
Fabio Carvalho is the name worth tracking off the bench. Tuesday at Reading was his first start in 11 months after an ACL injury and he scored, and he is also the player who scored a stoppage-time equaliser in this fixture last September.
Chelsea Team News & Injuries
Joao Pedro is out, and for longer than Chelsea first hoped. He landed awkwardly in an aerial challenge against Hull City on Sept. 12, played on and scored, but scans found knee edema alongside sprains of the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments, and ESPN Brazil reports a three to four week absence. He had already withdrawn from Brazil's squad. Chelsea lose three goals and three assists in four league games.
Danny Welbeck is the replacement. He arrived from Brighton in August on a two-year deal, is 35, and has been used sparingly in the league, two substitute appearances for 15 minutes. The cups tell a different story: he scored against Luton in the second round and twice in the 6-3 win over Leeds in the third. This would be his first Premier League start for Chelsea.
Reece James is the second problem and it has grown all week. He missed Tuesday's session, Alonso played it down on Thursday with "no, it was just a decision for Tuesday," and then Thomas Tuchel left him out of the England squad, which pointed at something real. The BBC now reports he is highly unlikely to play. Moises Caicedo is still a late call after two missed league games with a calf problem, with Alonso saying only that "he is getting closer." Neither is in the projected XI.
That leaves Valentin Barco projected alongside Romeo Lavia in central midfield. Barco signed from Strasbourg in August, is a left-sided defender by trade, and has one senior Chelsea appearance, a League Cup tie against Luton. Lavia has not completed 70 minutes in any match this season. Jordan Henderson (wrist), Emanuel Emegha (hamstring) and Marco Palestra (thigh) are all chasing debuts and all three are squad decisions rather than selection ones, Henderson's against the club he left in the summer. Chelsea have no suspensions.
The projection worth flagging beyond those two is Chavarria over Hato. Hato was replaced at half-time against Hull after misreading a long ball for the opening goal, and Alonso framed it as shape rather than punishment: "Tactical, we wanted a player with another profile, that with Pep and Jorrel, it's different and that was the decision."
Brentford vs Chelsea Head-to-Head Record
The Premier League series since Brentford's promotion in 2021 stands at 10 games, three wins each and four draws. The Gtech half of it is the run Brentford want to end: five home league meetings, four draws and one defeat, and no win.
| Date | Result |
|---|---|
| October 16, 2021 | Brentford 0-1 Chelsea |
| October 19, 2022 | Brentford 0-0 Chelsea |
| March 2, 2024 | Brentford 2-2 Chelsea |
| April 6, 2025 | Brentford 0-0 Chelsea |
| September 13, 2025 | Brentford 2-2 Chelsea |
Chelsea have not won a league game here since that October 2021 visit. The most recent meeting at this ground is the one to hold onto: Kevin Schade scored at 35 minutes, Cole Palmer levelled at 61, Moises Caicedo put Chelsea ahead at 85, and Fabio Carvalho equalised in the third minute of stoppage time.
The most recent meeting anywhere was Chelsea 2-0 Brentford at Stamford Bridge on January 17.
Brentford vs Chelsea Tactical Analysis
Chelsea's 3-4-2-1 asks Pedro Neto and Pep Chavarria to supply the entire width of the team, which means both wing-backs live high and the back three defends a wide area by itself. Brentford's 4-2-3-1 is built to attack that. Schade starts on the left and runs at the space behind Neto, a winger doing a defensive job; Jaidon Anthony does the same on the other flank against Chavarria, who arrived in August and has 118 minutes of Premier League football to his name. Igor Thiago's job is to hold the middle centre-back so neither wide defender in the three slides across early.
The second zone is Chelsea's six-yard box. Andrews was Brentford's set-piece coach before he took the head coach's job, and with Jensen out and Damsgaard projected to start on the bench, Vitaly Janelt becomes the primary corner taker into a box containing Ajer and Schuster. Chelsea have conceded nine goals in four league games, and Alonso's own diagnosis after the Hull draw was that "if you are soft or if you are not prepared, you will get punished, and we have been punished that way." He added that the problems are recurring and that "it will take time to fix them." Janelt has already scored twice this season.
Going the other way, the space Chelsea want is the pocket between Brentford's double pivot and their centre-backs, where Palmer and Morgan Rogers play as the two behind the striker. Rogers has scored in two of Chelsea's four league games, and if Welbeck starts ahead of Joao Pedro the two behind him matter more, not less, because Welbeck holds the ball and brings runners into play rather than making the runs himself.
Chelsea's own midfield is the soft spot in the plan, and it has got softer. Caicedo is unlikely, James is unlikely, and the projected pair is Lavia, who has not completed 70 minutes in a match this season, alongside Barco, a left-back with one senior appearance for the club. Pressing a two-man midfield with no natural holder and no settled partnership is Brentford's clearest route into the game, and Sangare and Janelt are the two players in this fixture built to do it.
Brentford vs Chelsea Odds
This has moved more than any other price on the matchweek. Chelsea opened the week as a comfortable road favourite and are now barely one at all.
| Sportsbook | Brentford | Draw | Chelsea |
|---|---|---|---|
| BetMGM | +155 | +275 | +150 |
| DraftKings | +160 | +275 | +155 |
| FanDuel | +160 | +270 | +155 |
| bet365 | +155 | +275 | +150 |
| Kalshi | +158 | +265 | +152 |
Wednesday's board had Chelsea at +125 and Brentford at +185. Chelsea have drifted 25 points and Brentford have come in 30, which is roughly the difference between a 45 percent chance and a 40 percent one, and Paddy Power now price both sides identically at +150. That is the market pricing the loss of a striker with six goal contributions and a captain in the same 48 hours.
Total goals is unmoved at 3.5, a full goal above the Premier League's standard 2.5 line. Over 3.5 is +115 at BetMGM and +118 at FanDuel, with Under 3.5 between -144 and -160. DraftKings has the line at 3, Over 3 at -135 and Under 3 at +110. The interesting part is that the total has not come down even though Chelsea have lost their centre forward, which says the books are still pricing Chelsea's defending rather than either attack.

Brentford vs Chelsea Key Matchups
Kevin Schade vs Pedro Neto's flank
Schade has three goals in four games, including both at Bournemouth at 34 and 56 minutes, and he already has three successful dribbles and three key passes on the season. He starts on the left against a converted winger in a back four that becomes a back three the moment Neto pushes on. Schade also scored the opener the last time these two met at this ground.
Igor Thiago vs Levi Colwill
Thiago scored 22 Premier League goals last season, a Brentford club record. This season he has four starts, 353 minutes and no goals, with five shots against Leeds and two against Sunderland that went nowhere. Colwill played the full 90 against Hull with four clearances and two blocks and is the most reliable member of Chelsea's back three, which makes this the matchup that decides whether Brentford's leading scorer finally gets off the mark.
Cole Palmer vs Vitaly Janelt and Mamadou Sangare
With Joao Pedro out and James unlikely, Palmer becomes the whole of Chelsea's creative threat. He was recalled to the England squad this week off the back of a start to the season in which he has taken at least three shots and created at least one chance in every league game, 15 shots and nine chances created in four. Brentford's double pivot has to handle him in the pocket while also covering Morgan Rogers, and with Barco rather than James behind them there is nobody arriving late from midfield to pull one of them away.
Caoimhin Kelleher vs Chelsea's shot volume
Chelsea had 65 percent of the ball against Hull and still drew. Kelleher has made 15 saves in four games, eight of them at Bournemouth alone, and has conceded four. If Chelsea camp in the Brentford half the way they did at Stamford Bridge, Kelleher's afternoon rather than Brentford's attack is what keeps this level.
Brentford vs Chelsea Set-Piece Takers
Set-piece responsibility for both clubs comes from RotoWire's Premier League set-piece takers guide, which covers all 20 teams for 2026-27.
Brentford
- Corners & free kicks: Vitaly Janelt, Mikkel Damsgaard, Keane Lewis-Potter
- Penalties: Igor Thiago, Kevin Schade, Fabio Carvalho
Chelsea
- Corners & free kicks: Pedro Neto, Reece James, Cole Palmer, Estevao, Morgan Rogers, Malo Gusto
- Penalties: Cole Palmer, Estevao
The asymmetry is the story. Damsgaard is projected to start on the bench, which leaves Janelt as Brentford's main delivery into a box Chelsea have been beaten in repeatedly, and Andrews came up through this club as the man who designed those routines. Thiago is first on penalties despite the drought, which matters in a game the market expects to be open.
Brentford vs Chelsea Prediction
The problem is the other end. Brentford have conceded in three consecutive games, their double pivot has to contain Palmer and Rogers in the pocket, and Sangare is playing his third match in seven days. Chelsea will still score, because Palmer is in this form and Welbeck has three goals in his last two cup starts, but a team without its first-choice striker and its captain is a worse bet to score twice than it was on Wednesday.
What stops this being a Chelsea win is the shape of the fixture itself. Brentford have not lost to Chelsea at the Gtech since October 2021 and have never beaten them here at all. Chelsea's last four league visits have all finished level and two of those were 2-2.
Score Prediction: Brentford 2-2 Chelsea
