Everton Team News & Injuries

Christian Norgaard is Everton's only absence, and he is not close, with RotoWire carrying him to the middle of the month. Hayden Hackney has cleared the ankle knock that made him a doubt at Bournemouth and is available.

The bigger issue is the turnover in Everton's attack. Iliman Ndiaye left for Manchester City on deadline day after starting both league matches, while Beto has also departed. Jack Grealish has returned on loan from Manchester City and is fit, giving Moyes an immediate option on the left or behind Thierno Barry.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles also arrived before the deadline and can cover right-back or midfield. The projected XI currently leaves Grealish out, but there is no availability reason preventing him from starting, making his role the biggest selection call to monitor before kickoff.

Manchester United Team News & Injuries

Amad Diallo is out until after the international break with the ankle injury he picked up in training before the Hull game, with a return targeted for early October. Carlos Baleba, the 65 million pound signing from Brighton, is out with ankle ligament damage he brought with him from Brighton's preseason, and Michael Carrick put it at two or three weeks while calling it "no major issue." Manuel Ugarte is out until around April after an ACL injury at the World Cup and Matthijs de Ligt is still working back from November's back surgery.

Mason Mount is the genuine call. He has been involved in training this week after missing the Ipswich game with a foot knock rather than an injury, and Carrick has him close, though a bench role looks the likelier first step after two games out.

And Benjamin Sesko is pushing for his first start of the season, which makes the projection replacing him with Rashford a call rather than a certainty. Carrick was warm about him Friday: "Ben's improving, he's been improving his fitness all the time. I'm really happy with how he's come back, so looking forward to seeing him on the pitch a little bit more." Sesko missed all of preseason and has been a substitute in both league games, but he also scored the winner the last time United played at this stadium.

Rashford has come off the bench in both league games and has not started a Premier League match for United since December 2024. Putting him in from the start would be a first.

Everton vs Manchester United Head-to-Head Record

These clubs have met 217 times, with United winning 97 to Everton's 72 and 48 drawn. United lead the recent record too, taking three wins and a draw from the last five league meetings.

The relevant number for Sunday is the home one. Everton have not beaten United in a home league game in their last four attempts, a run reading 0-1, 2-2, 0-3 and 1-2. United have also already won at this ground, beating Everton 1-0 here in February 2026 through a Sesko goal in the 71st minute after coming off the bench.

United's two games do not belong to the same team. At Hull they had 71.6 percent possession, their highest since September 2023, took 21 shots, put in 34 open-play crosses, their most in a Premier League game in almost eight years, generated 1.81 expected goals and lost 2-0. It was the first time in their league history they had lost an opening fixture to a newly promoted side. Bruno Fernandes diagnosed it himself: "same mistakes as we did last season, every away game we give too much of the ball to them."

Then they beat Ipswich 5-2 at Old Trafford with Fernandes scoring a hat-trick from eight shots, his joint-most in a Premier League match. It was his second Premier League hat-trick and both have come in United's opening home game of a season. He now has 17 goal involvements in his last 15 league games against promoted sides. Carrick's reaction was to refuse the compliment: "we're not getting carried away. We haven't cracked it, there's a long way to go."

Which of those United turns up depends on what Everton do, and Everton will do the Hull thing. Moyes' side beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in their opener while conceding 2.04 expected goals, the highest figure Palace have managed in a game without scoring since December 2018, because Pickford was outstanding. Then they drew 1-1 at Bournemouth through a James Tarkowski header from a corner in stoppage time. This is a team grinding results rather than controlling games, and it has four points from two.

The loss of Ndiaye is the thing that could undo it. He started both games and was Everton's most direct creator, and the replacement is a loanee who has played 20 league games in 18 months. Grealish keeping the ball in the areas Everton have to defend from is worth more against this United than a winger would be, because United's problem at Hull was that possession produced nothing. Give them the ball and make them cross it and they have shown they will.

Bruno Fernandes vs James Garner and Harrison Armstrong

Everything United did well against Ipswich came through Fernandes, and everything they failed to do at Hull was because nobody could find him in a position to hurt anyone. Garner and Armstrong are the pair asked to deny him that space, and Armstrong is 19 and making his way. Fernandes has featured in each of the last six meetings between these clubs and has a record against promoted sides that borders on absurd, but Everton are not a promoted side and they defend the middle better than the flanks. If United end up crossing from wide again, that is Everton's afternoon going well.

Thierno Barry vs Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez

Barry has scored in both Everton's opener and the cup win at Preston, and with Ndiaye and Beto both gone he is carrying the line largely alone. Maguire and Martinez are a pairing United trust but not one they have started together this season, with Ayden Heaven getting the Ipswich game alongside Maguire. Barry's game is running at defenders rather than waiting for service, which is the right profile against a back four still being decided, and Everton's best two goals so far have come from a header and a corner. United have conceded from set pieces already.

Everton's equalizer at Bournemouth came from a corner and Tarkowski's head, so their dead-ball work is worth taking seriously rather than treating as a footnote. Fernandes is first up on everything for United without argument and converted the penalty against Ipswich. Grealish arriving gives Moyes another option on free kicks if he starts.

Everton vs Manchester United Prediction

United have the higher ceiling and showed it against Ipswich. The problem is that Ipswich came out and played, and Everton will not. Moyes has a side that beat Palace while being out-created, drew at Bournemouth through a stoppage-time set piece and now has Grealish to help keep possession away from a United team that struggled badly when forced to break down Hull.

United still have more attacking quality, but Amad is out, Baleba is unavailable, Mount is a question and Carrick is still deciding on both his back four and center forward. Everton have already shown they can survive without controlling matches, and this feels like another one.
