FPL Gameweek 3 Rankings: Best Players & Captain Picks

Manchester City have the standout fixture of FPL Gameweek 3, hosting a Coventry side still searching for its first point, while Liverpool travel to Ipswich and Manchester United face a tougher test at Everton. That puts Erling Haaland at the top of the captaincy conversation, with Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden, Antoine Semenyo and Bruno Fernandes among the other premium names in strong spots.

These are my FPL GW3 rankings, best players and captain picks based on projected points, expected minutes, predicted lineups, fixture difficulty, role and price. Use the rankings below to compare transfer targets, starting decisions and captain options across every position.

Set your squad before the Gameweek 3 deadline on Friday, Sept. 4 at 1:30 PM ET (90 minutes before the Ipswich Town vs Liverpool kickoff).

FPL GW3 Captain Picks

The captaincy is the biggest weekly call.

Erling Haaland (Man City, vs Coventry City): Back to the top overall projection after his Gameweek 2 brace, and the fixture couldn't be better, a home date with a Coventry side that's yet to pick up a point. Don't overthink this one. This is the week to take the top score and move on. At a minimum, you should captain someone from Man City.

Bruno Fernandes (Man United, at Everton): Fresh off a match-defining performance against Ipswich, but a trip to Everton isn't quite as friendly. You can keep captaining Fernandes if you want, but without a guarantee of DEFCON, it'll be hard to trust him in tougher matchups this season.

Alexander Isak (Liverpool, at Ipswich Town): The underlying performances are a little shakier than the odds suggest, so it won't be easy to click any Liverpool player for captain. Still, Liverpool are one of the biggest favorites of the week and Ipswich aren't exactly a top defence.

FPL GW3 Best Players by Position

A quick read on who to build around before the table.

Forwards:Erling Haaland (Man City, vs Coventry City) is the clear top forward and captain. Alexander Isak (Liverpool, at Ipswich Town) is the next-best target if you want exposure without the Coventry-level fixture.
Midfielders:Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden (both Man City, vs Coventry City) are the two-for-one play off last week's Man-of-the-Match display, Cherki's the pricier but higher ceiling of the pair. Antoine Semenyo is also in this range. Bruno Fernandes (Man United, at Everton) is right behind them if you're comfortable with the tougher matchup.
Defenders:Maxim De Cuyper (Brighton, vs Leeds United) is the surprise name at the top of the defensive model this week, a genuine value price due to his advanced position. Nico O'Reilly and Josko Gvardiol (both Man City, vs Coventry City) are next if you'd rather load up on the City fixture from the back.
Goalkeepers:Gianluigi Donnarumma (Man City, vs Coventry City) grades out as the top keeper this week by a clear margin. The fixture alone does most of the work home vs Coventry.
