FPL Gameweek 5 Rankings: Best Players & Captain Picks

Manchester City have the standout fixture of FPL Gameweek 5, hosting Sunderland as the biggest favorite on the slate with the strongest clean-sheet and scoring outlook. Newcastle also have an appealing home matchup against Hull City, while Nottingham Forest host Coventry and Everton face Ipswich.

Those fixtures should shape the top of this week's FPL rankings, particularly for captaincy and defensive targets. Arsenal remain firmly in the conversation away to Brighton, but Manchester City, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest have the most favorable setups on paper.

These are my FPL GW5 rankings, best players and captain picks based on projected points, expected minutes, predicted lineups, fixture difficulty, role and price. Use the rankings below to compare transfer targets, starting decisions and captain options across every position.

FPL GW5 Captain Picks

Captaincy should start with Manchester City this week given the home matchup against Sunderland, but there are viable alternatives if you want to move away from the most obvious option.

Erling Haaland (Man City, vs Sunderland): The fixture puts Haaland immediately at the top of the captaincy conversation. City have the strongest scoring outlook of the week, and Haaland remains the most direct way to attack it.

Yoane Wissa (Newcastle, vs Hull City): Newcastle are in one of the better home spots of the slate and should generate plenty of attacking opportunities. Wissa is the most obvious forward to target, while Harvey Barnes offers another differential route into the matchup.

Bukayo Saka (Arsenal, at Brighton): Saka has already produced 30 FPL points through four matches despite plenty of attention going toward Arsenal's defence. Brighton remain short-handed, so Arsenal's attackers still carry plenty of upside despite playing away from home.

FPL GW5 Best Players by Position

A quick read on who to build around before the full rankings.

Forwards: Haaland is the obvious starting point because of the Sunderland matchup. Wissa has gained appeal with Newcastle's favorable run, while Thierno Barry and Liam Delap also have matchups that put them firmly in the conversation.
Midfielders: The biggest concern with Manchester City players outside of Haaland is minutes security. With Phil Foden suspended, Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki and Iliman Ndiaye could benefit. Martin Odegaard and Saka remain strong options for Arsenal's trip to Brighton.
Defenders: City defenders have the best combination of win probability and clean-sheet potential, keeping Josko Gvardiol and Marc Guehi near the top of the pool. Arsenal's back line remains appealing despite the trip to Brighton, while Ezri Konsa continues to draw interest as his ownership rises.
Goalkeepers: Manchester City lead the clean-sheet outlook, while Newcastle, Arsenal, Forest and Everton offer several alternatives depending on price and expected saves.
