Porto vs Manchester City Prediction, Predicted Lineups & Team News | Champions League

Porto host Manchester City at the Estadio do Dragao on Tuesday in Enzo Maresca's first European match as City manager. Our Porto vs Manchester City prediction is a draw, with Porto perfect through six matches this season, one goal conceded and a home environment City have never found easy.

City are 3-0 in the Premier League under Maresca, with Erling Haaland scoring in each of the last two. Porto, meanwhile, are dealing with absences at center-back, left-back and potentially central midfield heading into their biggest test of the season.

Porto vs Manchester City Lineups & Injury News

Porto vs Manchester City Predicted Lineups

Predicted lineups: Porto are projected in Francesco Farioli's 4-3-3 with three enforced changes. Nehuen Perez comes in for the suspended Jan Bednarek, Martim Fernandes is projected at left back with Zaidu Sanusi injured, and Hwang In-beom takes the place of the concussed Victor Froholdt. Both replacements are genuinely open, and the midfield one is the projection worth doubting. City are projected in a 4-2-3-1, and Matheus Nunes declaring himself fully fit on Monday makes the right back call look settled.

RotoWire's Champions League predicted lineups are updated throughout the week, with confirmed starting XIs added closer to kickoff.

Porto predicted starting XI (4-3-3): Diogo Costa; Alberto Costa, Jakub Kiwior, Nehuen Perez, Martim Fernandes; Hwang In-beom, Pablo Rosario, Gabri Veiga; William Gomes, Andre Silva, Pepe

Manchester City predicted starting XI (4-2-3-1): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Matheus Nunes, Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi, Josko Gvardiol; Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez; Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo; Erling Haaland

Porto Team News & Injuries

Jan Bednarek is suspended, and it costs Porto more than one night. UEFA handed him a two-match ban for the red card he took in last season's Europa League quarter-final at Nottingham Forest, so he misses this and the trip to Real Betis on Oct. 14 and does not return until PSV on Oct. 20. He headed Porto's equalizer against Moreirense on Friday, and Nehuen Perez comes in alongside Jakub Kiwior having only recently worked back from an eight-month absence.

Zaidu Sanusi is out with the right adductor injury he picked up at Academico de Viseu, and Portuguese reporting has him missing every Porto fixture this month with a return targeted around the October international break. The replacement is not settled. Francisco Moura started at left back against Moreirense and is fit, but RotoWire and A Bola both project Martim Fernandes, a natural right back who filled in there when Zaidu went off injured. Take that one to the teamsheet.

Victor Froholdt is out, and the mechanism is worth stating plainly. He was struck in the head in first-half stoppage time against Moreirense, the Moreirense player was sent off, and Froholdt left on a stretcher and went to hospital. UEFA's concussion protocol removes him from selection automatically, and Portuguese reporting puts the Benfica derby on Sept. 20 as his earliest realistic return rather than anything sooner.

Farioli did not soften the picture. "Without Diogo Costa, we are missing important players in every sector of the game," he said Monday, naming Bednarek, Froholdt and Samu Aghehowa, and adding Zaidu and Oskar Pietuszewski to the list. Pietuszewski is the name that had not been public before, and Samu is still weeks away from his ACL recovery. Farioli's framing was that it is "an opportunity for the others to prove they are ready to play at the highest level."

Manchester City Team News & Injuries

Jeremy Doku is out with the calf strain he aggravated in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, and Maresca is no longer promising him for the weekend either. Asked about the Manchester derby, he said only "Jeremy, we are not sure. We will have to wait."

Nico O'Reilly is the other absence and he is confirmed, left out of City's 22-man travelling squad with the lower-back injury he picked up in the warm-up before Saturday's win over Coventry, the one that put Enzo Fernandez into the XI. Matheus Nunes is no longer a doubt at all. He settled it himself at Monday's press conference: "I am good, 100 percent now. It was my ankle the day before Arsenal. I had a tackle and it was sore for a while but now I am fine." That makes him the expected starter at right back rather than Abdukodir Khusanov. There are no suspensions.

Iliman Ndiaye's withdrawal against Coventry was cramp rather than injury by his own account, and Ayyoub Bouaddi, the 86 million pound arrival from Lille, made his Etihad debut off the bench in the 76th minute in place of Fernandez.

Porto vs Manchester City Head-to-Head Record

These clubs have met four times and Porto have never won. City took both legs of a 2012 Europa League round of 32, winning 2-1 here and 4-0 at home for a 6-1 aggregate, then won 3-1 at the Etihad in the 2020-21 group stage.

The one Porto did not lose is the one worth remembering. On Dec. 1, 2020 they drew 0-0 with City at the Dragao, a result that sealed City's place at the top of the group and included a late City goal ruled out by VAR. That is the only competitive visit City have made to this stadium against Porto, and the last time they were here at all was the 2021 Champions League final, when Chelsea beat them 1-0.

Porto vs Manchester City Tactical Analysis

Porto are the best team in Portugal and it is not particularly close right now. Farioli won the title in his first season with 88 points and has started this one with six wins from six, 12 goals scored and one conceded, including the Supertaca. They beat Moreirense 2-1 on Friday with 70 percent of the ball and an expected-goals edge of nearly two, and their only concession all season came in that game.

His 4-3-3 presses high and defends transitions well, and Porto have a genuine set-piece reputation to go with it. Two of their goals this season have come from dead balls, Nehuen Perez heading in a Gabri Veiga corner at Rio Ave and Bednarek doing the same against Moreirense, and two more were penalties.

That is the profile of a side that can take something from a game it does not dominate, which is exactly what Tuesday will be.

City's start under Maresca has been three wins and no real test since Arsenal beat them 3-0 at Wembley in the Community Shield. They put four past Crystal Palace with Haaland and Rayan Cherki scoring twice each, then beat Coventry 1-0 through a Haaland header without ever looking troubled. The shape is a 4-2-3-1 that becomes something like a 3-2-5 in possession, which is recognisably the football Maresca played at Chelsea rather than a continuation of Pep Guardiola's.

Haaland is the constant through all of it. He has 34 Champions League goals in 39 appearances for City, two short of Sergio Aguero's club record, and he has scored in each of the last two games.

The reason to expect a tight night is that Porto's problems are all in the two areas City are least equipped to exploit right now. Bednarek and Zaidu missing weakens the defense, but City's own back line is unsettled, Doku is out and the wide rotation is unresolved. Porto without Froholdt lose their most physical midfielder, and City without O'Reilly are asking a 125 million pound signing four days into the job to control a hostile European away game.

Porto vs Manchester City Odds

City are road favorites at every book but nobody has them shorter than -150, and the draw sits around +300, which is a market treating this as a real game rather than a formality. FanDuel is the outlier on both sides, shortest on City and longest on Porto. Watch the line if Froholdt is formally ruled out.

Porto vs Manchester City Key Matchups

Erling Haaland vs Jakub Kiwior and Nehuen Perez

Porto have conceded one goal in six games and are about to face the most efficient centre forward in Europe with their first-choice partnership broken up. Kiwior spent last season on loan from Arsenal before Porto made it permanent in May, and Perez is in because Bednarek is banned rather than because he has earned it, though he did score at Rio Ave. Haaland does not need many looks and City do not need many phases to find him. If Porto's line sits as deep as it can, this becomes about whether Diogo Costa has the night he is capable of.

Gabri Veiga vs Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez

Porto's game runs through Gabri Veiga, who has a goal, an assist and a penalty this season and takes the corners that have produced two more. With Froholdt out, he has more to do and less help doing it, and the man beside him is unresolved. Portuguese reporting makes Seko Fofana the likeliest replacement ahead of Alan Varela, with Hwang In-beom the third option despite being the one RotoWire projects, and Fofana came through Manchester City's own academy. City's pivot is brand new too: Anderson cost 116 million from Nottingham Forest this summer and Fernandez arrived a week ago, and neither has played a Champions League game for this club.

Porto vs Manchester City Set-Piece Takers

City's set-piece responsibility comes from RotoWire's Premier League set-piece takers guide, which covers all 20 teams for 2026-27.

Porto

  • Corners: Gabri Veiga
  • Penalties: Andre Silva and Gabri Veiga have both converted one this season

Manchester City

Haaland took all six of City's penalties across competitions last season and there is no argument about that one, but the corner and free-kick order is genuinely unsettled under Maresca with Bernardo Silva gone to Real Madrid. Porto do not appear to have a rigid penalty hierarchy either: Andre Silva and Gabri Veiga each took one in the same game against Alverca. Porto's dead-ball delivery is worth respecting given two of their goals have come from it.

Porto vs Manchester City Prediction

City are the better team and will probably have the ball for most of the night, but this is the wrong week to expect them to be ruthless with it. They are nine days into having a new 125 million pound midfielder, four days removed from losing a starter in the warm-up, and still working out whether Foden or Ndiaye is the answer on the right.

Porto have won six from six, conceded once and have a route to goal from set pieces that does not depend on having the ball. What they do not have is Bednarek, Zaidu or, in all likelihood, Froholdt, and that is too much of a defense to be missing against Haaland.

Somewhere between those two things is a game that City lead and do not close out, or a game Porto edge in front and cannot hold. The Dragao has already given City one 0-0 and one European final they lost.

Score Prediction: Porto 1-1 Manchester City

Upcoming Fixtures

Porto travel to Casa Pia on Sept. 12 before going to Real Betis in Matchday 2 on Oct. 14, while City go to Manchester United on Sept. 13 and host Paris Saint-Germain on Oct. 14.
