Tottenham Team News & Injuries
James Maddison has a small shoulder fracture from the fall at Brentford and the club still had him down to be assessed on Friday, so he is a doubt rather than a certainty either way. That is brutal timing for a player who had only just come back from a year lost to an ACL injury. Xavi Simons is out until the spring and Wilson Odobert until the winter, both with knee injuries, and Dejan Kulusevski is still working away from the group with an individual coach and no timeline.
Mohammed Kudus has moved the right way. He has been out since January with a quadriceps problem and was not ready for the cup tie, but Roberto De Zerbi said Friday he could make the bench. Pape Matar Sarr is fine physically, though De Zerbi added a caveat that has nothing to do with fitness: "Pape is good. We have to see in the last days of the transfer market what can happen with him."
Tottenham have kept adding. Omar Marmoush joined on Thursday on a season-long loan from Manchester City with an obligation to buy next summer, four days after Savio arrived from the same club, and the club has confirmed he is available to play.
The rest of the news came off the bench at Charlton. Porro and van de Ven both got competitive minutes for the first time this season, Solanke started and scored, and Savio scored on debut. Van de Ven took a head knock that De Zerbi waved away as "nothing important."
Both of those cameos have now turned into starts. Van de Ven comes in for Marcos Senesi and Bentancur for Bergvall, which gives Tottenham a considerably more experienced spine than the one Brentford took apart.
Newcastle Team News & Injuries
Will Osula is out. He came off in the 55th minute against Liverpool after a collision with Virgil van Dijk, missed the cup tie, and is now expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks while he sees a specialist. That removes Matthias Jaissle's only senior center forward from a squad that was already short.
Dan Burn is out until around the October international break after rolling his ankle in training, and Joelinton is targeting a mid-September return. Valentino Livramento is back in full training but will not be involved, with Jaissle deliberately slowing him down: "he was long out and we want to take our time and learn out of the past. Giving him rather one week longer than shorter to have him on a consistent basis back."
The answer to Osula is a reshuffle rather than a like-for-like. Wissa moves from the No. 10 role into the center forward position and Willock steps into the space he vacates, which at least puts a player in there who scored against Liverpool. Nick Woltemade started through the middle in the cup and is the alternative if Jaissle would rather keep Wissa deeper.
Nico Gonzalez arrived from Manchester City on Wednesday and is registered in time to be involved, though a debut here would be some ask. The projected pivot of Jacob Ramsey and Miley also still is not the one that started at St James' Park, where Sean Steur played and then started the cup game too.
Jaissle's own framing before the West Brom game was that he had "many players who are exhausted and some have minor injuries," which is the honest read on a squad three weeks into a new manager.

These clubs have met 175 times, with Tottenham winning 74 to Newcastle's 66 and 35 drawn. The recent run belongs entirely to Newcastle, who are unbeaten in the last five meetings, have won five of the last seven in the league, and have taken both of the last two league games in north London by the same 2-1 scoreline.
The other number is the one that shapes this preview. Not one of the 61 Premier League meetings between these two has finished 0-0, and every one of the last 10 top-flight meetings has produced at least three goals.
Tottenham vs Newcastle Tactical Analysis
Tottenham were not beaten at Brentford so much as flattened. The expected goals finished 3.94 to 0.47, they did not manage a shot on target in the first half, and they equalled their heaviest opening-day defeat with five debutants on the pitch. De Zerbi's read was that his side "were not ready to fight the duels," and he has spent the days since talking about needing both soul and a style of play rather than only the second one.
Savio is the most obvious answer to that. He cost 75 million pounds up front with another 10 million in add-ons, he beats his man, and De Zerbi has been explicit that he wants more goals from his wingers. Tonali is the other. He did not play a minute against Charlton, held back with Senesi on a conditioning plan De Zerbi described afterwards, and comes into this rested against the club that sold him.
Newcastle have the opposite problem. Jaissle barely rotated in midweek, and his entire back four of Dedic, Thiaw, Botman and Hall started both the Liverpool game and the cup tie three days later. That is a defense playing its third match in eight days against a home side that has to respond to a 3-0.
They also have a specific vulnerability. Lewis Hall conceded a penalty against Liverpool in the 99th minute, and then conceded another one against West Brom five days later. He was excellent going forward in both games, with four crosses and two corners at St James' Park, but he is a left back giving away spot kicks in consecutive matches, and he will be defending Savio.
What Newcastle do have is a front line that scored twice against Liverpool and three times in the cup. Anthony Elanga ended a 40-game goal drought with the opener against Liverpool, Joe Willock scored his first in 61 appearances, and Harvey Barnes came off the bench at half-time against West Brom and scored twice against his former club.

There is barely a favorite here, and neither Osula being ruled out nor Tottenham's two changes have moved it. Tottenham sit around +125 at home, Newcastle between +175 and +195, and the draw is out near +265, which is a wide draw price for a game the books rate this close.

Savio vs Lewis Hall
The most consequential duel on the pitch, and the one with the clearest recent evidence. Hall has conceded a penalty in each of Newcastle's last two matches, and he is now defending an 85 million pound winger whose entire value is taking full backs on in isolation. Hall is also Newcastle's primary corner taker and one of their better attacking outlets, so pinning him back costs Newcastle at both ends. If Savio is anywhere near the level he showed for 20 minutes against Charlton, this is where Tottenham's afternoon opens up.
Sandro Tonali vs Lewis Miley and Jacob Ramsey
Tonali did not play a minute in midweek while Newcastle's midfield worked through a third game in eight days, and he faces the club that banked 100 million pounds for him seven weeks ago. Miley was Newcastle's most creative player against Liverpool with two chances created, and Steur has started both competitive games, so whichever pairing Jaissle picks has been running hard. Tonali was quiet on his Spurs debut at Brentford with two shots and nothing else. This is the game where a club-record signing is supposed to look like one.

Tottenham's list has thinned badly. Maddison is out, Simons is out until the spring and Kudus is a serious doubt, which leaves Tonali, Porro and Tel on dead balls and Solanke as the penalty taker with Richarlison out of the projected XI. Newcastle's is now genuinely unresolved, because both of their listed penalty takers are center forwards and neither Osula nor Woltemade is projected to start.
