FPL Best XI: Top Picks for Gameweek 14

FPL Best XI: Top Picks for Gameweek 14

This article is part of our FPL Best XI series.

With over a third of the 2014-15 Premier League campaign completed, the fixtures will now come hot and heavy as England's top-flight enters the holiday season.

Before previewing the midweek Gameweek 14 action, let's recap what happened over the weekend.

Arsenal got the ball rolling with a 1-0 victory at West Brom, a result that ended the Gunners' two-game losing skid, but prolonged the Baggies' stretch of futility to three matches.

Many low-scoring results followed suit Saturday, as West Ham claimed a 1-0 victory to halt Newcastle's five-game winning streak and Liverpool snapped a three-game slide by the same score over Stoke City.

Meanwhile, both Swansea City versus Crystal Palace and Burnley versus Aston Villa finished in 1-1 draws that perhaps satisfied all parties other than the Swans.

Those results coupled with Leicester City's own demise saw the Foxes fall to last-place following a 3-2 defeat at Queens Park Rangers.

Conversely, Manchester United remained in fourth-place by sealing a 3-0 win over Hull City.

To close Saturday, Chelsea's established cushion atop the standings allowed them to maintain their first-place position despite Sunderland once again nicking points from Jose Mourinho's men by earning a 0-0 draw.

With Chelsea dropping points, an undermanned Manchester City advanced to second-place by topping this season's surprise side Southampton 3-0 at St. Mary's Stadium on Sunday.

Also making a jump was Tottenham, who overcame an early deficit to beat Everton 2-1 at home.

From those outcomes, three goals and five clean sheets highlighted the Best XI's performance.

At goalkeeper, David de Gea recorded his third consecutive clean sheet in Manchester United's win over Hull City.

Likewise, Arsenal's Per Mertesacker secured a clean sheet versus West Brom and John Terry also earned points for his role in preventing Sunderland from scoring.

Unfortunately, Ashley Williams was the odd defender out of the clean sheet club, as Swansea City conceded a penalty kick goal to Crystal Palace.

In the midfield, a hamstring injury forced Angel di Maria to be withdrawn merely 14 minutes into Manchester United's match with Hull City, but Chelsea's Cesc Fabregas registered a clean sheet versus Sunderland, as did Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez against West Brom.

Most notably, Everton's Kevin Mirallas scored a wonderful curling goal at Tottenham to salvage some midfield fireworks.

Up front, Best XI captain Wayne Rooney continued his harassment of Hull City, scoring the middle goal in Man United's 3-0 triumph; however, unlike Rooney, Chelsea's Diego Costa really disappointed.

Not only did Costa waste a good matchup at Sunderland, but he also drew a yellow card that will force him to miss Gameweek 14 through suspension.

Nonetheless, Wilfired Bony of Swansea City helped the cause, as the Ivorian scored his team's lone goal versus Crystal Palace.

With minimal time to rest, it's already time for all 20 Premiership sides to gear up for another round of fixtures held over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday.

Four matches kick off Gameweek 14, as Burnley hosts Tottenham, Leicester City welcomes Liverpool, Manchester United awaits Stoke City, and Swansea City invites Queens Park Rangers in Tuesday's opening contests.

Later on, Aston Villa head to Crystal Palace with both teams level on 13 points, while fifth-place West Ham travels to a West Brom side on the decline in recent weeks.

Come Wednesday, a London derby of Tottenham at Chelsea represents a classic Premier League pairing, but across the capital, Southampton at Arsenal headlines this week's slate of games.

Then, in two apparently uneven ties, second-place Manchester City visits 13th-place Sunderland, and at Goodison Park, Everton encounters a Hull City side winless from their past six matches.

Bearing those matchups in mind, let's pick out some fantasy difference makers for Gameweek 14 of the Premiership.

Formation: 3-4-3

Goalkeeper:

Lukasz Fabianski v.

With current totals of five clean sheets and 43 saves, both of which tie for second among goalkeepers, Fabianski has been a top-tier fantasy player at his position to this point in the season. With Fabianski in goal, Swansea City's defense has been particularly solid at home, where only Chelsea and Southampton have allowed fewer goals. This week, the Polish goalkeeper faces a Queens Park Rangers team that has gone scoreless in seven of its past nine away league matches.

Defenders:

Leighton Baines v.

A tremendous all-around player, Baines boasts two goals, six assists, and three clean sheets through 12 games. For perspective, Everton's left-back has supplied as many assists as Manchester United's record signing Angel di Maria, who led Europe's top-five leagues in the category last season. The Englishman has kept a clean sheet in his past three total appearances at Goodison Park, where Everton is gifted with a matchup this week versus a Hull City outfit with merely one goal from its last five Premiership outings.

Gary Cahill v.

With a pair of consecutive clean sheets, Cahill now carries five scoreless efforts into Wednesday's match versus Tottenham. Additionally, no team has conceded fewer goals at home this season than Chelsea, who blanked Tottenham at Stamford Bridge last campaign. Furthermore, Cahill's Chelsea have five clean sheets from their past seven home league matches and Spurs' projected starting center forward Roberto Soldado has just two Premiership goals in 2014.

Aaron Cresswell v.

As West Ham currently sits in fifth-place, offseason signing Cresswell has emerged in recent weeks at his left-back position. In fact, over the Hammers' past seven Premier League matches, Cresswell has notched three clean sheets, two assists, and one goal. That goal came over the weekend, when his clean sheet versus Newcastle added to his healthy fantasy production. In fine form, Cresswell and West Ham take on a West Brom side this week that has gone three league games without scoring a goal.

Midfielders:

Eden Hazard v.

Speaking of solid form, Hazard sports two goals in his past two home Premier League matches, bringing his season tally to four total goals thus far. Last season, the Belgian led Chelsea with 14 goals, as he served as the Blues' main threat in the final-third. Without talisman Diego Costa available this weekend, Hazard should return to being the all-important finisher for Chelsea, the league's highest-scoring team. Along with Hazard scoring a penalty versus Tottenham at home last season, the left wide-man could benefit from Chelsea's current streak of six straight home matches in the league with at least two goals.

Yaya Toure v.

Following a sensational 20-goal, nine-assist campaign last season, Toure has found things harder to come by this term, though his recent form suggests a breakthrough has been made. That's because he has scored in back-to-back Premier League matches, and three of his past four efforts across all competitions for Manchester City. Moreover, over that four-game span, Toure has fired an impressive 17 shots, proving his ability to get forward. With the Citizens facing plenty of questions regarding their starting defense heading into Wednesday's match at Sunderland, Toure could be relied upon to orchestrate the middle of the park for the defending champions. Although Sunderland held Chelsea scoreless over the weekend, it would be some feat if they were able to hold City at bay as well. The last time Toure went against Sunderland, which was a league cup match last season, the imposing midfielder tallied one goal and one assist.

Gylfi Sigurdsson v.

An awesome offseason addition, Sigurdsson has thrived as Swansea City's No. 10 player this season, as he's already registered two goals and eight assists. With that production, Sigurdsson ranks second among Premiership players in the latter category, which he helped with another assist over the weekend. That came after Sigurdsson scored a perfect free kick in his prior appearance at home. Even further, the Icelandic playmaker has an admirable haul of one goal and four assists from his past four home matches in Premiership action. That stands a great chance to improve this week, as Sigurdsson will try to pick apart Queens Park Rangers' last-ranked defense.

Santi Cazorla v.

Like Sigurdsson, Cazorla has been in the giving mood of late, as the tiny Spaniard has set up three goals from his past two total outings for Arsenal. In doing so, Cazorla leads the Gunners with four assists across all competitions this season. However, along the way, Cazorla's shooting boots have gone missing, as he's yet to score on the campaign and remarkably hasn't found the goal in the league game since January. Coincidentally, that goal came against Southampton, who Cazorla will be happy to see this week. Although the Saints still have the Premiership's best defense, they're fresh off leaking three goals and now travel to play Arsenal, who have deployed Cazorla in his preferred central attacking role over the past week.

Forwards:

Wayne Rooney v.

In scoring over the weekend, Rooney claims at least one goal in four straight competitive outings. Furthermore, the English striker has scored in seven of his past nine games across all competitions, evidencing a player in stellar form. Not to mention, Rooney has scored in four of Manchester United's five home games in Premier League play this season. Determined to continue his success, Rooney expects to be fit for this week's match against Stoke City, who have shipped at least two goals in the past six visits to Old Trafford.

Romelu Lukaku v.

Although he was held down over the weekend, Lukaku has still provided a goal in two of his past three matches for Everton, who he leads with five Premier League goals this season. Considering the Toffees have only been outscored by the top three of Chelsea, Manchester City and Southampton thus far, being Everton's top scorer is a fine feat for the undeniable talent that is Lukaku. This week, the young Belgian could give Hull City fits, as the Tigers are winless from their past six and have conceded at least two goals in their past seven tussles with Everton across all competitions.

Sergio Aguero (C) v.

Speaking of unstoppable forces, Aguero has been just that for Manchester City this season. For example, "Kun" began last week by netting a hat-trick against European giants Bayern Munich, before doling out a pair of assists at then-second-place Southampton over the weekend. Overall, Aguero has put his name to 17 goals and three assists across just 19 matches for Manchester City this season. Aguero is especially deadly on the road, as he's contributed six goals in seven away appearances for the Citizens during their current league campaign. Facing a bottom-half Sunderland defense this week, Aguero earns the Best XI captain's armband.

Fabianski

Baines – Cahill – Cresswell

Hazard – Toure – Sigurdsson – Cazorla

Rooney – Lukaku – Aguero (C)
