The Armband: FPL Gameweek 28 Captain Rankings

This article is part of our The Armband series.

The end of Gameweek 27 ended with a sputter, as most tuned into Barcelona's incredible comeback against PSG instead of dozing through a scoreless Man City-Stoke draw. At the least, Sergio Aguero already scored Sunday and Peter Crouch assisted Saturday. Something that completely blew over my head was the thought to captain defenders from either side, as both secured two clean sheets. I apologize. Aleksandar Kolarov didn't score or assist yet still had full bonus points in the 2-0 win against Sunderland.

Elsewhere, there was a ton of goals over the weekend with six teams scoring at least thrice. Unfortunately, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was not on that list. Fernando Llorente got his usual brace for Swansea. Manolo Gabbiadini scored yet again, but maybe more importantly Dusan Tadic is having a bit of a revival (two goals, one assist). Troy Deeney needs a mention too because he has scored in five of the last six matches. And, of course, Harry Kane scored a couple, while Romelu Lukaku actually produced on the road, which was a positive.

There's not a whole lot going on for Gameweek 28, which makes the pickings for a captain extremely slim. There are only a few players to even consider with Everton (vs. West Brom) and Liverpool (vs. Burnley) the main sides to focus on. Lukaku will be the most popular captain choice mostly because he's a completely different player at Goodison Park. In his last four home matches he has seven goals on 18 shots. The Baggies have managed to keep their road matches low scoring for most of the season, but in no way does that matter in a gameweek with only five matches. Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines will be intriguing options once again considering West Brom failed to score against Crystal Palace last weekend and aren't even finding the back of the net once per road match.

Sadio Mane will be the other name at the top of lists as he has three goals, an assist and full bonus points in his last two at Anfield. Burnley's road struggles are well known, which will also allow some to consider Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho for the armband.

As for the rest, good luck. Gylfi Sigurdsson can be debated because he continues to produce, scoring or assisting at least once in each of his last six matches. Even on the road, Sigurdsson is one of the safer options, as Hull always allow a goal or two. Llorente had his monthly brace last weekend, so expecting him to match that again so soon would be a mistake; at least that's how I look at it. But again, on a short week, he'll be captained by plenty.

Other than that, there's about zero other captain possibilities, unless you're a big fan of the Cherries and want to back Joshua King at home against West Ham. Keep in mind, he has five goals in his last six matches.
