Past Fantasy Outlooks
2013
2012
Cloyd was named the MVP of the International League after going 12-1 with a 2.35 ERA for Triple-A Lehigh Valley last season. His success earned him a promotion to the majors late last year, where he joined the Phillies' rotation and made six starts. Cloyd had some mixed results in the majors before being shut down at the end of the year with a tired arm after throwing a career-high 200 innings. Cloyd isn't an overpowering pitcher. He complements his mid-to-high 80s fastball with a cutter and changeup to keep hitters off balance. His upside is a back-of-the-rotation starter in the majors, but his current role looks to be a swingman working mostly in long relief if he earns an Opening Day roster spot. The Phillies could also opt to send him back to Triple-A so he is stretched out in case they have a need for a starter later in the year.
Cloyd came out of nowhere last year after underwhelming in a relief role during the 2010 season, but was moved to the rotation at High-A Clearwater last year and made his way to Double-A by the end of the season. Cloyd works in the high-80s to low-90s and uses a change-up and slider to keep hitters off balance. He posted excellent K/9IP and BB/9IP rates last season and should be pushed to Triple-A this year. He'll need to maintain those ratios to stay on the radar given his age, but as of now he at least looks like a potential back of the rotation starter.
