Kirby was traded from the Brewers to the Pirates on Sunday in exchange for Kevin Kramer, Jake Crouse of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Kirby has dealt with several injuries early in his career, but he returned to the mound in May after he hadn't pitched since September of 2018. He made 17 relief appearances for Double-A Biloxi this year and recorded a 1.93 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 18.2 innings. The 27-year-old is no longer regarded as a top prospect following his slew of injuries, but he could reach the majors at some point if he can remain healthy. Kirby will report to Double-A Altoona going forward.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
Kirby did not appear professionally in 2016 as he continued to rehabilitate from Tommy John surgery. Struggles towards the end of his college career -- potentially related to the injury -- lowered his stock and allowed the Brewers to snap him up in the first supplemental round of the 2015 draft. Kirby already features three strong pitches in his arsenal, including a changeup and a slider. At his best, Kirby is vicious -- in 2014 with the University of Virginia, he threw an 18-strikeout no-hitter against Pittsburgh. We'll have to wait and see if Kirby can rediscover that form post-injury, but many pitchers have recovered from minor league Tommy John surgery to go on to successful major league careers, and Kirby has the repertoire to be among their ranks.
Kirby was one of the top college pitching prospects in 2014, but medical issues resulted in him sliding to Milwaukee with the 40th pick in the 2015 draft. He pitched 12.2 innings in August for Low-A Wisconsin, but ended up needing Tommy John surgery in September, essentially ruling him out for all of 2016. For this reason, there is no need to target him in all but the deepest dynasty leagues, but this is not a player to forget about. Kirby has a plus fastball and plus slider when healthy, and if his changeup progresses he could become a No. 3 starter. If the elbow surgery proves to be a major developmental setback, and his command does not come all the way back, he has the stuff to make it as a late-inning reliever. Kirby should be on a strict innings limit in the lower levels when he returns in 2017, so while he is 22 years old, he may not reach the majors until around 2019 or 2020.
