Ockimey spent the entirety of the 2019 season with Triple-A Pawtucket, posting generally mediocre results. Despite showing good power (.255 ISO) and having an eye for a the zone (17.5% walk rate), Ockimey simply didn't make enough contact, striking out 29.7 percent of the time en route to a mediocre .204/.353/.459 slash line. That was good for a 107 wRC+, not enough for a player limited to first base defensively. Ockimey can likely blame a .241 BABIP for some of his struggles, however, and his line may have looked considerably better had a few more grounders found holes in the defense. With the 24-year-old now having over a year of Triple-A experience under his belt, there's a good chance he makes his big-league debut at some point this season, though it's hard to see him carving out a major role, especially with MIchael Chavis and likely Bobby Dalbec ahead of him on the organizational depth chart.
Ockimey climbed the organizational prospect rankings off a promising year of growth in his first stop at a full-season affiliate. The lefty-hitting first baseman hit .226/.367/.425 with 18 homers in 117 games at Low-A Greenville. The promise is in the power stroke and his on-base ability. What the slash line doesn't reveal is an improvement in both his strikeout and walk rates, attributable to having him fit for contact lenses. Although there's still a significant level of swing-and-miss at the plate, he showed enough with his bat to warrant interest. There were negatives, however, as Ockimey is a pull-heavy hitter who faced infield shifts, something rarely seen at the lower level of the minors. He'll need to develop some opposite field power or he runs the risk of falling below the level of a .250 hitter. As a prospect limited to first base defensively, Ockimey will need to hit for power and average in order to be a part of Boston's long-term plans.
Ockimey, a fifth-round draft pick 2014, is a well-developed prospect (6-foot-1, 225 pounds) who is limited to first base. As such, his bat needs to be good. He showed some power potential at Short-Season Lowell in 2015, but there's also a lot of swing-and-miss in the bat, striking out in 34 percent of his plate appearances. He tends to get the bat out early, which leaves him vulnerable to off-speed offerings. Ockimey will need to hit and hit for power if he's going to move up the ladder.
