Struggles against Astros
POakland Athletics
May 26, 2024
Brooks (0-2) allowed five runs (one earned) on nine hits and three walks over 4.1 innings Sunday, striking out one and taking a loss against Houston.
ANALYSIS
Brooks worked around some danger in each of the first three innings without allowing a run before the Astros broke out for five runs in the fourth. Fortunately for him, only one run was earned before a throwing error by Max Schuemann. Brooks fired a quality start in each of his first two MLB appearances this season but needed 90 pitches to get through 4.1 innings Sunday. He now owns a 3.63 ERA with a 9:5 K:BB through 17.1 innings. Brooks' next start is lined up to be in Atlanta next weekend.

Stat Review
How does Aaron Brooks compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9

  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.

Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
2015
The Cubs acquired Brooks from Oakland for Chris Coghlan in February, but he was never healthy in 2016 after landing on the disabled list with a hip contusion in early April. Despite efforts to get back in the mix at Iowa, Brooks was limited just five appearances -- four starts -- in the Pacific Coast League before he was moved to the 60-day DL in August. In his last healthy campaign (2015), Brooks was effective as a starter at Triple-A, relying on good control to survive in the hitter-friendly PCL, but his limited exposure to big league hitters yielded poor results (6.67 ERA, 1.46 HR/9). Brooks remained on the Cubs' 40-man roster at the start of the offseason, suggesting that the front office sees him as a useful organizational piece, perhaps capable of contributing in long relief or as an option to make spot starts while working mostly as a starter at Iowa if he's able to return to health in 2017.
The A's acquired Brooks in the Ben Zobrist deal as a secondary piece behind Sean Manaea. Brooks spent August and September in the majors making 11 appearances for the A's, nine of which were starts. The results were not pretty, as he sported a 6.71 ERA while only striking out 35 batters in 51 innings. Brooks is not considered a high-level prospect and has a 4.18 ERA across his five minor league seasons. He has solid control as he limits walks effectively (career 1.4 BB/9 in the minors), but will likely never be a huge strikeout pitcher. The Cubs saw something they liked in Brooks, as they received him in the Chris Coghlan trade, but this almost guarantees that he will be transitioned to a reliever long term. Given the depth in the Cubs' bullpen, it is unlikely that he makes much noise in 2016.
Brooks was solid as a starter in 2014 for Triple-A Omaha, posting a 3.88 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 139 innings in the minors. The same cannot be said for his first career big league start, however, as he was unable to make it out of the first inning after allowing seven runs on five hits and three walks, while also hitting two opposing batters. The 6-foot-3 right-hander will likely start the season at Triple-A once again, though he should be on manager Ned Yost's short list of names to be called should the need for a spot starter arise. The 24-year-old used a 92 mph fastball, along with a slider and changeup, to some success in the minors, as he only walked 4.3% of the batters he faced. If he can put that rocky first start behind him, there should eventually be a role for him in the majors, though it's unclear if that will translate to much fantasy value.
