John Sickels' Column: MLB Top 100 Prospects

John Sickels' Column: MLB Top 100 Prospects

This article is part of our John Sickels' Column series.

Players who have exceeded rookie qualifications (130 at-bats, 50 innings) are not included. Players cut this time for that reason are: Stephen Strasburg, Carlos Santana, Buster Posey, Michael Stanton, Pedro Alvarez, Jake Arrieta, Dan Hudson, and Jose Tabata.

All prospect lists are a blend of short-term, medium-term, and long-term potential. We try to consider both fantasy and "real life" baseball in mind when doing these lists. As a result, this list looks different than if we were looking solely at pure baseball ability, or if we focused entirely on fantasy value. Obviously you'll need to adjust your investments based on the context in which your fantasy team plays.

With a few exceptions, short-season players, 2010 draftees, and players from the Dominican and Venezuelan Summer Leagues are not included. More of them will be included in the final end-of-season list due at the end of September.

I try to avoid big swings in value for a player from list to list, to avoid "flavor of the month" syndrome and overreaction to a cold streak or hot streak, although there are more strong changes on this particular version than are usual for me.

1) Domonic Brown, OF, Philadelphia Phillies ETA 2010
2) Jeremy Hellickson, RHP, Tampa Bay Rays ETA 2010
3) Jesus Montero, C, New York Yankees ETA 2011
4) Julio Teheran, RHP, Atlanta Braves ETA 2012
5) Mike Trout, OF, Los Angeles Angels ETA 2012
6) Eric Hosmer
