Closer Watch

St. Louis - Yet another change after Eduardo Sanchez blew the save Friday night. Fernando Salas and Mitchell Boggs are expected to take over the role, with the former pitching two innings Friday and likely being unavailable Saturday night. As a result, Boggs might get the first crack at taking back the job while the Cards try to right the ship with Sanchez after he's issued at least one walk in each of his last seven appearances.

Seattle - Another day and another rough outing for Brandon League. Each of his last three appearances have resulted in a blown save and he was going to be held out of Saturday's game to rest. Manager Eric Wedge said that League is still the team's closer, but Jamey Wright was going to receive the save opportunity Saturday if there was one.

Los Angeles (NL) - Kenley Jansen was used to strike out the final batter in Friday's win for a one-out save against the D-Backs after Vicente Padilla gave up two runs on two hits while walking a pair. Jansen has filthy stuff, but his inconsistent control has kept him from seizing outright control of the Dodgers' closer situation to this point.

Toronto - It was a one-out save for Frank Francisco, but given that starter Ricky Romero pitched the first 8.2 innings, it's a good indication that Francisco has secured the closer's role from Jon Rauch at the present time. Francisco has a 12:6 K:BB in nine innings including three saves in four attempts since returning from the DL in mid-April.

Recommended Pickup

Jamey Wright, RP, SEA -- It's not a ringing endorsement of a guy who will provide a lot of value (saves) in the long run, but Wright is clearly the next in line for the closer's role if manager Eric Wedge decides he's going to make a change. Brandon League has been shelled in four straight outings including three blown saves during that span. The lack of viable alternatives (don't kid yourself, Chris Ray isn't showing any signs of regaining his 2006 form) on the big league roster right now is staggering. Dan Cortes could eventually become a factor, but he was rarely used during his time with the big club and was optioned back to Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, former first-round pick Josh Fields remains stuck at Double-A with a 16:13 K:BB in 15.2 innings there. At 25, his prospect status has dimmed considerably and he's much further away from the Mariners' ninth-inning situation than anyone would have expected after he was drafted in 2008.

Other recent recommendations: Mark Trumbo, Julio Borbon, Eric Hosmer, Vance Worley
