Closer Watch
Arizona - It appears that Bryan Shaw picked up a rogue save Sunday, as J.J. Putz did not enter the game. Putz recorded saves on Friday and Saturday and it is likely that he had the day off to avoid pitching three days in a row.
Baltimore - The Orioles are off to a surprising start and after Jim Johnson was rewarded the job out of spring training he has nailed down both opportunities without much of a hiccup.
Boston - Things are ugly in Beantown. Mark Melancon and Alfredo Aceves have now teamed to blow two of the first three games of the season, and Sunday's failure should go down as one of the worst bullpen meltdowns of the season. Aceves entered in the ninth with a three run lead and he allowed two hits followed by a home run. He has not retired any of the four batters he has faced this season. The game went to extras and Melancon took to the mound in the bottom of the 11th, where he allowed a walk-off home run to Alex Avila. No word on what Boston's next move will be in perhaps the ugliest closing situation in the league.
Chicago White Sox - In a surprising move, manager Robin Ventura went with Hector Santiago as his closer, while Matt Thornton is the setup man and Addison Reed appears out of the picture as of now. Though he has almost no MLB experience, Santiago had no trouble nailing down a save on Saturday and he is a hot commodity as of now.
Cleveland - Chris Perez had an epic fail on Opening Day. He was able to nail down Sunday's opportunity successfully, though he did allow two baserunners.
Florida - Heath Bell made his first save opportunity with the Marlins a forgettable one. He allowed Jay Bruce to tie the game with a home run and then gave up three hits in a row to take the loss. There is no danger of Bell losing his job but it is noteworthy that he blew an opportunity right off the bat.
Kansas City - The Royals turned to Jonathan Broxton to close out Sunday's win. It was a save with a four-run lead because Broxton inherited two runners from Aaron Crow, who started the ninth inning. Broxton didn't blink and picked up three strikeouts to finish it off. Greg Holland was not called upon in the game and he already has a forgettable appearance to his name from Opening Day, so at this point it appears that Broxton has a leg up on the closer's job.
Tampa Bay - Three appearances for Fernando Rodney: One win and two saves. That may get him the No. 1 fantasy ranking in the early part of the season. Rodney got one out in each save, so it is still a bit unclear what the Rays are doing with Kyle Farnsworth on the shelf. Joel Peralta and Jake McGee could figure into the equation as well.
Washington - Henry Rodriguez claimed Saturday's save and notched three strikeouts in the process. It appears this is a committee between Rodriguez and Brad Lidge while Drew Storen is on the DL.
