Yahoo DFS Baseball: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

PITCHER

Gio Gonzalez, WAS at ATL ($33): Gonzalez takes aim at a Braves squad that has struggled against southpaws all season, generating a .284 wOBA and .103 ISO that both rank as the worst in the majors against that handedness. He also enjoyed a solid outing in his only other meeting against them this season, scoring 18.8 fantasy points on the strength of six shutout innings back in April.

Julio Urias, LAD at CIN ($27): Urias is a tournament-only dice roll given his high-upside matchup and rock-bottom price. Much like the Braves, the Reds have had their share of trouble against lefties this season, posting a mediocre .297 wOBA and a bloated 23.1 percent strikeout rate against southpaws. Urias has shown what he can do against a poor contact team on a couple of occasions this season, scoring 25.0 and 26.8 fantasy points against the Brewers, which the Reds rival in strikeout rate. There's some risk of an abbreviated outing if the Dodgers keep close tabs on his pitch count, but the flip side is that you may get 20+ fantasy points at a significant savings.

CATCHER

Willson Contreras, CHC at COL ($11): It's a bit of a surprise to find Contreras at this price, particularly in a matchup against the hittable Jorge De La Rosa at Coors Field. The Cubs backstop has a .337 wOBA against lefties and a 35.3 percent hard contact rate on the road. He's also been hitting well in August, with a .367 wOBA over his first 14 games of the month. De La Rosa has yielded a .371 wOBA, 12 homers and a 5.13 xFIP to righty bats this season, and he sports atrocious 3.71 K/9 and 5.29 BB/9 rates in his last three starts.

FIRST BASE

Paul Goldschmidt, ARI at SD ($21) Goldschmidt is the first of two potent right-handed D-backs bats I'm deploying against Padres starter Luis Perdomo, who's surrendered a .390 wOBA to right-handed hitters that rises to a jaw-dropping .527 when facing them at Petco Park, along with a 5.77 xFIP. The rookie has also been struggling in his last three starts, allowing a .402 wOBA and 34.5 percent hard contact rate over that span. Goldy a .375 wOBA and 36.6 percent hard contact rate against right-handed pitching, as well as a .328 batting average and .411 wOBA over 80 plate appearances this month.

SECOND BASE

Jean Segura, ARI at SD ($21): Much of the same written about Goldschmidt applies to Segura, who has a .367 wOBA against right-handed pitching, as well as a .380 batting average, .436 wOBA and .239 ISO over his last 16 games. He's also flashed a ceiling well north of 20 fantasy points on multiple occasions this season, eclipsing that mark in two of his last three games. Given Padres starter Luis Perdomo's well-documented difficulties against righty bats at home, Segura provides a boatload of upside.

THIRD BASE

Kris Bryant, CHC at COL ($27): Bryant is another highly appealing option to have against Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa at Coors Field. The Cubs phenom has an astronomical .471 wOBA, .273 ISO and 38.5 percent hard contact rate against southpaws on the road, and a .379/.452/.652 batting line and .466 wOBA in his last 16 games.

SHORTSTOP

Marcus Semien, OAK at CWS ($11): Semien draws a tough matchup against White Sox starter Jose Quintana, but makes for a solid tournament play for precisely that reason, as well as his unusually low price. There's also the matter of his considerable success against southpaws, against whom he's tallied a .391 wOBA and .303 ISO, including .439 and .444, respectively, when facing them on the road. Meanwhile, Quintana has been solid for most of the season, but he's been vulnerable to the long ball against righty hitters, surrendering 13 of his 15 homers to that handedness.

OUTFIELD

Christian Yelich, MIA at PIT ($19): Yelich is in prime position to exploit Pirates starter Ryan Vogelsong's long history of trouble against lefty bats. The veteran pitcher has surrendered a .388 wOBA, 5.26 xFIP and 33.9 percent hard contact rate to left-handed hitters, while Yelich has a .402 wOBA and .221 ISO against righties, along with a robust 48.1 percent hard contact rate when facing them away from Marlins Park. He's been wielding a hot bat as well, with a .315 batting average, .372 wOBA, .233 ISO and 43.4 percent hard contact rate over his last 17 games.

Ian Desmond, TEX at TB ($12): Desmond's price remains stuck in neutral, making him a solid and cost-effective target for tournaments. The Rangers outfielder has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games and has a .389 wOBA and 31.7 percent hard contact rate against southpaws. Rays starter lefty Drew Smyly has been excellent over his last three starts, but has given up 18 of his 24 homers on the season to right-handed hitters.

Tyler Naquin, CLE vs. TOR ($18): Naquin seems priced too low for the upside he brings, as well as his excellent track record against right-handed pitching. The Indians superstar rookie has a whopping .420 wOBA, .300 ISO and all 14 of his homers this season against righty arms, along with an impressive 44 percent hard contact rate. Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman has yielded a .354 wOBA and 33.7 percent hard contact rate to left-handed hitters on the road, where he's lost three of his last four decisions.
