Yahoo DFS Baseball: Tuesday Picks

PITCHER

Mike Leake, STL vs. PIT ($36): Leake has been one of the few bright spots for a struggling Cardinals team, with a 0.60 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 13:1 K/BB ratio over 15 innings through two starts. Those two performances came against a pair of offenses currently ranked in the top six in runs scored per game (Washington and Cincinnati), so staying hot shouldn't be difficult against a Pittsburgh lineup that has scored the second-fewest runs so far at just 3.20. The pitcher Leake out-dueled last time out (Max Scherzer) is priced $22 higher, so this is a tremendous comparative bargain given the former Reds starter's combination of form and matchup.

Kyle Freeland, COL at LAD ($25): The left-handed Freeland matches up nicely against a Dodgers lineup laden with lefty sluggers such as Joc Pederson, Corey Seager and Adrian Gonzalez. He held them to one run and six baserunners with six strikeouts over six innings at the hitter-friendly Coors Field (1.37 park factor in 2016) on Apr. 7, so it's fair to expect at least as much success in this rematch at Dodger Stadium (0.81 park factor in 2016). Freeland's $25 price is tied for the cheapest among all probable starters, which means using him also allows owners to maximize their buying power at other positions.

CATCHER

Mike Zunino, SEA vs. MIA ($7): Zunino's bound to snap out of his early funk sometime, and this home matchup against Marlins southpaw Wei-Yin Chen is as good a time as any to turn things around. The catcher posted a .368 wOBA when facing lefties last season while smashing nine of his 12 long balls at the homer-friendly Safeco Field (1.16 home run factor in 2016). Zunino's price can't drop any lower, so this is the right time to buy low.

FIRST BASE

Chris Davis, BAL at CIN ($19): It's tough to find a more likely candidate for a home run than Davis in this situation. His three long balls through 11 games have him at 167 since the start of the 2013 campaign, with 126 of those coming against right-handers. Righty Bronson Arroyo is giving up 3.60 HR/9 after finishing between 1.16 and 2.08 in each of his previous eight seasons with the Reds, and the Great American Ball Park's fourth-ranked 1.18 home run park factor last season suggests that number is likely to stay high.

SECOND BASE

Ryan Schimpf, SD vs. ARI ($13): Schimpf is a rare all-or-nothing proposition at second base, with a .152 batting average but three homers in 12 games. This is as good a time as any to take a gamble on the affordable left-handed hitter, as opposing pitcher Shelby Miller is allowing a .334 wOBA to batters from that side after surrendering a whopping .400 mark in 20 starts last season. Even if he goes without a hit, Schimpf should at least offer a consolation prize in the form of a walk or two after already drawing 13 this season.

THIRD BASE

Jake Lamb, ARI at SD ($18): Lamb deserves consideration any time a right-hander takes the mound for the opposition given his early .488 wOBA in that split following a .374 performance last season. San Diego's Jarred Cosart is a far below average righty at that, with a 2.14 WHIP and just 4.2 innings pitched it two starts following a disappointing 2016 that saw him post a 6.00 ERA over 57.0 innings. Petco Park has seen 1.01 as many times runs scored as the average venue since the start of the 2016 season after having its outfield dimensions resized, so those with reservations about using Lamb due to its outdated pitcher-friendly reputation can rest easy.

SHORTSTOP

Brandon Crawford, SF at KC ($16): Crawford's coming off two consecutive seasons with no worse than a .334 wOBA against righties, making him a solid choice with Jason Hammel pitching for Kansas City. The veteran starter surrendered a .340 wOBA in this split in 2016, and is coming off four consecutive campaigns with a HR/9 of at least 1.17. Crawford has already launched two balls into the seats this season to give him 35 homers since the start of the 2015 campaign, so he offers significantly greater upside in that regard than your typical $16 shortstop.

OUTFIELD

Seth Smith, BAL at CIN ($14): The Great American Ballpark's hitter-friendly nature was touched on in the Davis section, and his fellow left-handed slugger also makes a strong choice here given Arroyo's .354 career wOBA allowed to hitters from that side. Smith's in a prime position to score runs out of the leadoff spot, and has more than enough power to drive some in himself given his career .188 isolated power.

Travis Jankowski, SD vs. ARI ($7): Miller's well-documented struggles against lefties make Jankowski a strong bargain bin option for owners looking to spend big elsewhere. Jankowski doesn't possess much power, but is in a good position to score runs out of the two-hole in the batting order. He also brings a strong possibility of contributing value on the base paths after swiping 30 bags in 2016.

Aaron Hicks, NYY vs. CWS ($12): Hicks' Yankees tenure is off to a fantastic start, with a .318/.500/.773 line through 30 plate appearances. Patience and power have been the keys to his success, as evidenced by a massive 25.8 percent walk rate and .455 isolated power. As a result, the switch-hitting outfielder is primed to take advantage of a home matchup with right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, who has walked six batters in 10.2 innings en route to a 1.97 WHIP.
